Description

2021 Teso la Monja Almirez is a powerful, characterful red from Toro that showcases just how refined Tinta de Toro (the local Tempranillo clone) can be. Sourced from 50-year-old vines and aged 14 months in oak, it combines depth, structure and a striking sense of place at a price that overdelivers for this level of quality. Born from the legacy of the original creators of the iconic Numanthia and Termanthia, Almirez continues the tradition of intense yet polished Toro reds with remarkable aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Almirez is almost opaque, with an inky black core and a deep purple rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose is generous and complex, opening with ripe black fruits—blackcurrant, blackberry and cassis—layered with notes of caramel, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, graphite and a subtle mineral edge. Elegant oak tones are beautifully integrated, adding spice and a touch of vanilla without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, Almirez is full-bodied and mouthfilling, yet remarkably pure and precise. The dark red and black fruit is dense and ripe, framed by fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh rather than heavy. Flavors of black cherry, cassis and plum intermingle with hints of espresso, cocoa, toasted oak and savory spice, leading into a long, powerful finish that lingers for close to a minute—echoing the praise it has received from top critics. While already impressive and approachable now with decanting, this vintage will evolve beautifully over the next 10+ years, gaining even more complexity and polish in bottle.

Production
Almirez is crafted from old-vine Tinta de Toro grown in the heart of the Toro appellation, in vineyards around Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena. The terroir here is marked by poor, sandy soils with underlying clay and pebbles, offering excellent drainage and naturally low yields—ideal conditions for concentrating flavor and preserving the authenticity of the pre-phylloxera vine material that Toro is famous for. The sand-rich soils played a key role in protecting many of these vines from the phylloxera louse, allowing ungrafted, original rootstocks to survive where most of Europe’s vineyards were lost. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure meticulous selection of only perfectly ripe clusters. In the cellar, fermentation is carefully controlled to extract color, aroma and tannin without harshness, followed by 14 months of aging in wooden barrels, which polishes the structure and adds layers of complexity while preserving the wine’s vibrant fruit and mineral core.

Food & Serving
This is a superb wine for rich, flavorful dishes—think grilled or roasted lamb, beef ribeye, Iberico pork, oxtail stew, venison or other game. It also pairs beautifully with slow-braised meats, hearty casseroles, aged Manchego or other firm sheep’s cheeses, and dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles or roasted root vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimum expression of fruit and complexity. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the wine to open fully and soften the tannins; more mature bottles can be gently decanted mainly to remove any sediment.

Producer
Teso La Monja is one of the flagship estates of the renowned Eguren family (Hermanos Eguren), a name synonymous with top-quality Tempranillo in Spain. After the sale of their original Toro project—Vega de Toro, producer of the famed Numanthia and Termanthia—to Moët & Chandon, the family acquired exceptional old parcels and founded Teso La Monja to pursue an even more refined, terroir-driven style of Toro. Located in the province of Zamora, with vineyards spread across Valdefinjas and Villabuena, the estate focuses on low-yielding, often ungrafted old vines that express the unique identity of Tinta de Toro. Teso La Monja has quickly become a benchmark for the region, with wines like Almirez, Victorino and Alabaster regularly earning high critical acclaim and helping to cement Toro’s reputation as a source of some of Spain’s most powerful yet sophisticated red wines.
