Description
2021 Talbot Caillou Blanc de Talbot is the luminous white counterpart to the famed red wines of Château Talbot, showcasing a refined, vividly fresh expression of Bordeaux blanc. Crafted primarily from Sauvignon Blanc with a touch of Sémillon, this wine balances bright citrus purity with subtle texture and depth. As one of the relatively rare white wines from the Médoc, it offers a distinctive, elegant alternative for Bordeaux lovers who usually think only of reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Blanc de Talbot shines a pale straw to light lemon color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is lifted and precise, with aromas of lemon zest, grapefruit, white peach, and fresh pear, layered with notes of gooseberry, lime blossom, and a gentle touch of crushed stone and subtle oak spice.
On the palate, this is crisp and finely cut, driven by fresh acidity that frames flavors of citrus, green apple, and ripe stone fruit. A discreetly creamy mid‑palate—often derived from lees aging—adds roundness and length, while nuances of wet stone, herbal undertones, and a hint of white flowers bring complexity. The finish is clean, saline, and refreshing, making the wine as suited to the aperitif hour as it is to the table. Enjoyable now for its tension and brightness, it should develop additional nuance and flesh over the next 3–6 years with proper cellaring.
Production
Blanc de Talbot is produced from estate vineyards in the Saint-Julien area of Bordeaux, where gravelly, well-drained soils over limestone and clay help Sauvignon Blanc maintain freshness and aromatic intensity, while Sémillon adds body and subtle richness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both vibrancy and precision, with careful sorting to ensure only the healthiest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats and partly in barrels, emphasizing pure fruit expression while allowing a measured influence of oak. Subsequent aging on fine lees enhances texture and complexity, contributing to the wine’s graceful balance of freshness and depth.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Talbot Caillou Blanc de Talbot is a versatile partner for seafood and refined, lighter dishes. It pairs beautifully with oysters, prawns, scallops, ceviche, grilled white fish, and sushi, as well as goat cheese tart, poultry in light cream sauces, and fresh salads with citrus or herb accents. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and crisp structure. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a white wine carafe 15–20 minutes before serving can help open up the more subtle floral and mineral notes.
Producer
Château Talbot is one of the historic estates of the Médoc, located in the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux and classified as a 4ème Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. While the château is best known for its age-worthy red wines, Blanc de Talbot reflects the estate’s long-standing quest to express its terroir through a refined, characterful white. Under the stewardship of the Cordier family for several generations, Château Talbot has earned a reputation for consistency, classic styling, and reliability, standing as a benchmark producer within Saint-Julien and contributing significantly to the region’s global reputation for fine Bordeaux wines.
