Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Rock Star Syrah shows a bright red core with youthful purple hues at the rim, signalling its energy and freshness. The nose is perfumed and expressive, with notes of rose petals, red berries, wild strawberries and red cherries layered over hints of cedar, vanilla and a subtle minerality. A gentle, savoury spice runs through the aromatics, adding complexity without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Syrah that remains wonderfully approachable and supple. Silky, fine-grained tannins frame flavours of ripe red cherry, strawberry compote and crushed berries, intertwined with elegant spice tones, a touch of bay leaf and a faint, stony minerality. The acidity is lively yet well integrated, giving the wine a lifted, fresh profile and a long, graceful finish. Enjoyable now for its charm and fragrance, it also has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 6–8 years, gaining further complexity and savoury depth.

Production
Sourced from low-yielding vineyards in cooler sites within Stellenbosch, this Syrah benefits from a temperate maritime influence and well-drained, predominantly decomposed granite and shale soils that contribute to its finesse and mineral edge. Grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the morning to preserve aromatics and natural acidity. Whole bunches were placed directly into the fermentation vessel without prior crushing or destemming, encouraging a portion of whole-bunch and intracellular fermentation that enhances perfume and texture. The must was gently worked with five pump-overs or mixings per day to achieve optimal extraction of colour, flavour and fine tannins, with a total maceration of 16 days. Yields were carefully limited, and only 650 litres per ton were pressed, focusing on the purest juice. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels, where the wine was allowed to integrate and develop subtle oak complexity while maintaining its fresh, elegant profile.

Food & Serving
This Syrah is a superb partner for richly flavoured, savoury dishes. It pairs beautifully with game stews such as hare or wild boar, slow-braised beef, grilled ribeye or sirloin, and dishes featuring earthy, aromatic herbs like bay leaf and rosemary. Mature hard cheeses, especially aged Gouda, Comté or a well-aged Cheddar, also make excellent matches. Serve at 16–18°C to bring out its aromatic detail and supple texture. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to open up the floral and spicy notes, though the wine is already very accessible straight from the bottle.
