Description
2021 Rocas de Seña is the exciting new second wine from Chile’s iconic Seña estate, created to showcase a more vibrant, immediately approachable expression of this celebrated terroir. Named after the rocky, volcanic soils in which the vines are rooted, it marries ripe Chilean fruit with Old World finesse. This inaugural vintage stands out with its uniquely Mediterranean-Rhône inspired blend, broadening Seña’s stylistic range while preserving the precision and elegance that made the estate famous in landmark tastings around the world.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2021 Rocas de Seña shows an intense violet-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is layered and expressive, with subtle floral notes of violets and wild herbs such as sage, alongside juicy cherry and blueberry. Gentle tones of toast weave through the fruit, with intriguing nuances of dill, clove and sweet baking spice.
On the palate, the wine is fresh, juicy and finely structured, driven by bright red and blue fruits – think strawberry, sour cherry, pomegranate and blueberry – wrapped in a subtle savory frame of pastry, roasted nuts and spice. The tannins are remarkably polished and non-grippy, giving a smooth, velvety texture that makes it accessible even in its youth. A long, linear and lively finish underlines the wine’s balance and nerve. Enjoy now for its exuberant fruit, or cellar for 6–10 years to allow the aromatics and savory complexity to deepen.
Production
Rocas de Seña is sourced from Seña’s high-quality vineyards planted on poor, rocky volcanic and hillside soils in coastal-influenced Aconcagua, where cool breezes and wide diurnal shifts preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. The blend—35% Malbec, 21% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Grenache, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Mourvèdre—takes inspiration from both Bordeaux and the Rhône, with each variety harvested separately at optimal ripeness. Grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels to capture purity of fruit and fine tannin. Aging takes place in a mix of French oak barrels (and often some larger formats and/or concrete, depending on the lot) to harmonize the blend, add gentle structure and spice, and preserve the wine’s fresh, vibrant character.
Food & Serving
With its generous fruit and supple structure, 2021 Rocas de Seña is wonderfully versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, marinated flank steak, herbed roast chicken, or pork tenderloin, as well as richer Mediterranean dishes like lamb kofta, ratatouille, or roast vegetables with rosemary and thyme. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (slightly cooler than room temperature) to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up and show its floral, spicy detail, especially in the first few years after release.
Producer
Seña was founded as a visionary joint venture between Chilean wine pioneer Eduardo Chadwick and Napa legend Robert Mondavi, with the goal of crafting a world-class Chilean icon to rival the great wines of Bordeaux and beyond. Based in the Aconcagua region, Seña quickly rose to international prominence, most famously through the 2004 “Berlin Tasting,” where it outperformed some of the world’s most revered estates such as Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Margaux and Sassicaia in blind tastings held in cities like Budapest and Hong Kong. Today, Seña is widely regarded as one of Chile’s benchmark fine wine producers, known for its meticulous viticulture, forward-thinking blending and consistent presence among the country’s highest-rated wines. Rocas de Seña extends this legacy, offering a more approachable yet still profoundly terroir-driven expression of the estate.
