Description

2021 Seña is one of Chile’s true icon wines – a meticulously crafted Bordeaux-style blend born from the vision of Eduardo Chadwick and the legendary Robert Mondavi. This vintage brings together 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Malbec, 17% Carménère and 6% Petit Verdot, showcasing both power and elegance in equal measure. With a perfect 100-point score from James Suckling, the 2021 stands as a benchmark for Chilean fine wine and underlines Seña’s status among the world’s great reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2021 Seña presents a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, youthful and intensely concentrated at the rim. The nose is wonderfully pure and refined: aromas of red and black cherries, ripe plum and blackcurrant are layered with redcurrant, wild herbs, violet and wild lavender, lifted by a subtle thread of sweet spice and cedar from fine-grained oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a remarkable sense of poise. Juicy red and dark fruits unfold in layers, supported by polished, ultra-fine tannins and a lively line of acidity that keeps everything fresh and precise. Notes of graphite, cocoa nibs, tobacco leaf and subtle baking spice emerge with air, giving depth without ever feeling heavy. The alcohol is beautifully controlled at 14%, and the 22 months in barrique (78% new, plus large Stockinger barrels) are so well integrated that oak feels like a frame rather than a feature. Already seductive in its youth, this vintage has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over 15–20+ years, gaining further complexity, silkier texture and more savoury nuance.

Production
Seña is sourced from the estate’s biodynamically farmed vineyards in Aconcagua, where a Mediterranean climate meets the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean and Andean breezes. The combination of warm days, cool nights and a diverse mix of soils – including clay, colluvial and alluvial components – allows Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Carménère and Petit Verdot to ripen slowly while retaining excellent natural freshness. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then sorted rigorously to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the final blend. Around 90% of the must is fermented in stainless steel to preserve purity and precision, while 10% is fermented in concrete eggs for extra texture and vibrancy. The young wine then matures for 22 months in French barriques (78% new) and a portion in large Stockinger casks, achieving a high level of oak integration while respecting the character of the fruit and the Aconcagua terroir.

Food & Serving
2021 Seña is a natural match for refined, flavourful dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or entrecôte, venison or other game with red wine jus, and slow-braised beef short ribs. Its floral lift and fresh acidity also work beautifully with porcini risotto, truffle-infused dishes, grilled vegetables, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. If drinking young, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open and reveal its full aromatic complexity; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant of around 30–45 minutes is sufficient to wake the wine without losing its more delicate nuances.

Producer
Seña was conceived in the mid-1990s as a groundbreaking joint venture between Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errázuriz and Napa Valley pioneer Robert Mondavi, with the shared ambition of creating a truly world-class Chilean wine. From its first vintages, Seña set out to rival the great wines of Bordeaux and Tuscany, a vision dramatically validated at the famous Berlin Tasting events initiated in 2004. In blind tastings held in cities like Budapest and Hong Kong, Seña and other top Chilean wines were ranked alongside – and often ahead of – icons such as Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Margaux, Stag’s Leap and Sassicaia, with Seña taking first place in Budapest and the 2007 vintage finishing second only to Château Margaux in Hong Kong. Today, Seña stands as a flagship of the Aconcagua region and one of South America’s most acclaimed fine wines, recognised internationally for its elegance, consistency and its role in redefining Chile’s place on the global wine map.
