Description

2021 Sei Solo Preludio is the ‘second wine’ from Javier Zaccagnini’s highly personal Ribera del Duero project, crafted from old-vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) in the famed village of La Horra. It offers a more immediately approachable expression of the Sei Solo style, while still capturing the depth, finesse and authenticity of this tiny, sought-after domaine. With production limited to just around 4,000 bottles, this is a rare chance to experience one of Ribera’s most characterful modern classics at a remarkably accessible level. What sets Preludio apart is its combination of old-vine concentration and lifted, finely tuned elegance, a reflection of both its privileged terroir and Javier’s uncompromising standards. The wine’s name and label are a tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach’s violin works, symbolising precision, harmony and balance — all qualities mirrored in the glass. Although the Sei Solo project was conceived in 2007, Javier held back the wines for years, only bottling under his private label once they met his exacting expectations, continuing the legacy he helped build at Aalto and in the broader Ribera del Duero region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2021 Sei Solo Preludio typically shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with a purple rim, reflecting both its youth and its concentration from low-yielding old vines. The nose is expressive yet refined, with aromas of ripe black cherries and dark plums interwoven with notes of wild herbs, violets, subtle graphite and a gentle touch of well-integrated oak (spice, cocoa and a hint of vanilla), rather than overt wood. On the palate, Preludio tends toward a medium to full-bodied style, with silky but present tannins and a fresh, balancing acidity that keeps the wine lively and precise. Expect flavours of dark berry fruit (blackberry, mulberry, black cherry), joined by hints of licorice, tobacco leaf and a faint mineral, almost chalky edge that speaks to its La Horra origins. The finish is long and graceful rather than heavy, suggesting a wine that offers immediate pleasure but also the structure to evolve. While it can be enjoyed in its youth for its purity of fruit and energy, it should develop additional complexity over the next 5–8 years, softening its tannins and bringing out more savoury, tertiary notes.

Production
The grapes for Sei Solo Preludio come exclusively from old Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) vines, aged approximately 60–90 years, rooted in the exceptional terroir surrounding the village of La Horra in the heart of Ribera del Duero. This area is renowned for its patchwork of old vineyards, combining poor, well-drained soils with marked diurnal temperature swings, conditions that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration, freshness and aromatic complexity. Harvesting is typically done by hand, allowing a strict selection of only the healthiest, most balanced bunches to enter the cellar. Vinification follows a minimalist, quality-first approach: careful sorting, gentle extraction to avoid over-extraction of tannins, and maturation in carefully chosen oak barrels (often used rather than new, particularly for Preludio) to frame the fruit rather than dominate it. The result is a wine that faithfully reflects its old-vine origins while maintaining an elegant, finely etched profile.

Food & Serving
2021 Sei Solo Preludio is a versatile Ribera del Duero red that shines alongside flavourful yet refined dishes. Classic pairings include grilled or roasted lamb, Iberian pork (presa or secreto), roast duck, and beef dishes such as entrecôte or short ribs. It also works beautifully with richer poultry preparations, game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Manchego, Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to preserve its freshness and aromatic detail; avoid serving it too warm, which can emphasize alcohol and mute the fruit. For young vintages like 2021, a short decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open up and soften, revealing its full aromatic range and textural finesse.

Producer
Sei Solo is the highly personal project of Javier Zaccagnini, one of the key figures in the modern history of Ribera del Duero. After serving as president of the Ribera del Duero DO council from 1992 to 1998, Javier co-founded the famed winery Aalto with Mariano García in 1999, helping to cement the region’s reputation among the world’s great wine areas. In 2007, he embarked on Sei Solo, focusing on a small number of exceptional old-vine Tinto Fino parcels in La Horra — a village that is also home to some of the region’s most iconic vineyards, including those used for the cult wine Pingus. The project’s name and aesthetic pay homage to Johann Sebastian Bach, with ‘Sei Solo’ referencing Bach’s cycle of six solo violin works and the label reproducing his own handwriting. From the outset, production has been tiny (around 1,000 bottles of the flagship Sei Solo and 4,000 of Preludio), with releases delayed until Javier feels the wines truly express his vision. This meticulous, artist-like approach has earned Sei Solo a reputation as one of Ribera del Duero’s most distinctive and sought-after small estates.
