Description

2021 Schloss Johannisberg Riesling Rheingau Goldlack Trocken is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most historic estates, crafted exclusively from the finest parcels surrounding the iconic Schloss. This is not just a crisp white wine, but a concentrated, age‑worthy Riesling that captures the steep, sun‑drenched slopes of the Rheingau in a single glass. The “Goldlack” designation traditionally marks the top selection at Schloss Johannisberg, a nod to the prestigious casks once reserved for the estate’s very best wines and its centuries‑old role in defining Riesling as a noble grape.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Goldlack Trocken shows a bright, pale straw to light gold hue with silvery reflections, indicating both youth and precision. The nose is intensely focused and layered: ripe white peach, nectarine and juicy pear are woven with lime zest, green apple, and crystalline notes of crushed slate. Subtle aromas of white flowers, lemon blossom, and fresh herbs emerge with air, along with hints of wet stone, fennel seed, and a touch of smoky minerality that is very Rheingau. On the palate, the wine is dry, taut and structured, with a striking interplay of ripeness and razor‑sharp acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, citrus peel, and green plum are carried by a powerful mineral core and a saline edge that lengthens the finish. The texture is both silky and firm, with a slight grip that suggests serious extract and depth. Youthful and tightly wound in 2021, this Goldlack has excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity in the form of honeyed notes, beeswax, dried apricot and petrol nuances while retaining its backbone of freshness.

Production
The Riesling for the Goldlack Trocken is sourced from Schloss Johannisberg’s privileged, south‑facing monopole vineyard in the heart of the Rheingau, overlooking a broad bend of the Rhine at roughly the 50th parallel. Here, the combination of steep slopes, optimal sun exposure, and reflective light from the river encourages slow, even ripening, while the soils of quartzite, loess and loam impart a distinctive mineral tension and precision to the fruit. Grapes are hand‑harvested in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it into the Goldlack selection. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place with carefully selected or indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and large traditional oak casks, at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic purity and texture. Extended aging on fine lees adds depth, polish and a creamy mid‑palate, all while maintaining the wine’s hallmark clarity and linear, mineral finish.

Food & Serving
This 2021 Goldlack Trocken is a versatile partner for refined cuisine, particularly dishes that highlight freshness, texture and subtle richness. It pairs beautifully with shellfish (oysters, scallops, langoustines), grilled or pan‑seared white fish, ceviche, and sushi or sashimi, as well as classic German pairings such as freshwater trout. It also shines alongside lightly spiced Asian dishes, poultry with citrus or herb sauces, and vegetable‑focused plates like asparagus, artichoke, or fennel. Serve well‑chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics to fully open. Young bottles benefit from a brief decant of 30–45 minutes, which helps the wine unfold from its tightly coiled structure into a more expressive, layered profile.

Producer
Schloss Johannisberg is one of the most storied estates in the wine world and a true icon of the Rheingau, with a history of viticulture stretching back some 1,200 years. Perched on a hill above the Rhine, the estate became the first single vineyard in the world devoted exclusively to Riesling in 1720, effectively cementing the grape’s status as the region’s signature variety. Schloss Johannisberg is also famously associated with the 1775 “discovery” of late‑harvest Spätlese Riesling, a turning point in German wine history. Today, the estate remains a benchmark for classical Rheingau Riesling in all stylistic ranges, from bone‑dry to lusciously sweet, and its tiered color system—of which Goldlack represents the pinnacle selection—continues to signal quality and precision to collectors and enthusiasts around the globe.
