Description
RedHeads R’dotto Royale Italian Blend is a bold, characterful Australian red built around classic Italian varieties—Barbera, Montepulciano, Nebbiolo, Sagrantino, and Sangiovese. It brings together the Old World spirit of those grapes with the generosity and intensity of Adelaide fruit, showcasing a wine that is both expressive and distinctive.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2021 vintage shows a deep dark red colour with a vivid purple edge. The nose opens with layers of red and dark berries—cherry, blackberry, raspberry, and pomegranate—wrapped in subtle herbal and savoury notes.
On the palate, it feels refined and well put together, with plenty of fruit supported by herbs, leather, tobacco, and firm tannins. Bright acidity keeps the wine balanced and complete, giving it enough structure to develop nicely over the next few years, while still being enjoyable now for those who like a wine with plenty of grip and personality.
Production
The grapes are sourced from several vineyards across the Adelaide region, bringing complexity and a blend of different site expressions. Fermentation takes place in open tanks with the cap pumped over twice daily, helping to extract colour, flavour, and texture. The wine then undergoes a second fermentation in oak to build further depth and intensity before maturing for 10 months in used French and American oak barrels (500 and 300 litres).
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for medium-rare grilled steak, especially with oven-roasted potatoes or similarly hearty sides. It also works well with roast lamb, grilled sausages, or rich mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about 30–60 minutes can help soften the tannins and open up the aromatic profile.
