Description
From the southern corner of South Australia comes the 2021 Redheads Harmonie Rox Coonawarra Chardonnay, a standout white from a region far better known for its powerful reds. Sourced from the cool-climate Coonawarra appellation—famous for some of Australia’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon—this Chardonnay shows a striking, almost Burgundian elegance and mineral precision. Crafted from a single vineyard on prized terra rossa soils over limestone, it offers superb freshness, structure, and impressive aging potential at a very compelling price.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Harmonie Rox Chardonnay is bright and inviting, with a pale straw color and subtle green reflections that hint at its freshness and youth. The nose is finely etched and aromatic, offering layers of white peach, ripe nectarine, and mandarin peel, supported by delicate floral notes and a faint suggestion of spice from its time in French oak.
On the palate, this is an elegant, dry, and beautifully balanced Chardonnay. Lively acidity frames flavors of stone fruit, citrus, and mandarin, with a gentle creaminess and discreet oak adding texture rather than weight. The limestone influence brings a clean, mineral line through the mid-palate, leading to a long, citrus-tinged finish with mandarin and white peach lingering on the tongue. Thanks to its cool-climate backbone and careful élevage, this 2021 vintage has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5–7 years, gaining nutty, honeyed nuances while retaining its freshness.
Production
The Harmonie Rox Chardonnay is sourced from the single Harmony Rox vineyard in Coonawarra, a cool-climate zone on the same latitude as the Yarra Valley, but distinguished by its famous terra rossa topsoil over limestone bedrock—conditions reminiscent of Burgundy. The well-drained, iron-rich red soils and cooling influences create an extended growing season, allowing Chardonnay to ripen slowly and build flavor without sacrificing acidity. Grapes are hand-selected to ensure optimal ripeness and purity of fruit before being gently pressed. Fermentation takes place partly in French oak barrels and partly in stainless steel, a dual approach that marries texture and complexity with brightness and precision. The wine is then matured on its lees in a combination of French oak and stainless steel to enhance mouthfeel, integrate flavor, and preserve the wine’s vibrant, cool-climate character.
Food & Serving
This refined Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with shellfish (scallops, prawns, lobster), grilled or roast chicken, creamy seafood pasta, and richer fish dishes such as salmon or barramundi. Its stone fruit and citrus profile also make it an excellent match for a cheese board, particularly with semi-hard cheeses, mild blue cheeses, dried apricots, and a drizzle of honey. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the fruit and subtle oak notes to express themselves. A brief 20–30 minutes in the fridge after opening or a short splash-decant can help the wine open up, especially in its youth.
Producer
Redheads Studio began life as a small, renegade winemaking project in South Australia, giving talented winemakers the freedom to experiment with premium fruit from top regions. Over time, it has evolved into a respected boutique producer known for sourcing distinctive parcels of grapes and crafting wines with a strong sense of place and personality. In Coonawarra, Redheads taps into one of Australia’s most celebrated terroirs, traditionally associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, to reveal a more unexpected side of the region through Chardonnay. Their Harmonie Rox bottling showcases both Redheads’ innovative spirit and Coonawarra’s limestone-driven elegance, earning a reputation for delivering character, quality, and value far beyond its price point.
