Description
The 2021 Raen Winery Chardonnay Charles Ranch is a finely etched, coastal Chardonnay from one of Sonoma’s most dramatic and wind-swept sites. Sourced from old, pre-phylloxera vines high above the Pacific in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, it balances coastal energy with quiet depth and complexity. This is a Burgundy-inspired expression of Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, shaped by altitude, ocean influence and more than four decades of vine age.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay is pale straw to light gold with a subtle green rim, signaling its youth and tension. The nose is detailed and lifted, offering notes of white flowers and citrus blossom alongside fresh nectarine, lychee and a distinct impression of wet stones and crushed seashells. With a gentle swirl, more saline minerality and delicate hints of chalk emerge, giving the wine a coastal, almost sea-breeze character.
On the palate, the wine is elegant yet quietly powerful, with a refined, rounded texture carried by precise, vibrant acidity. Flavors of lime blossom, citrus zest and ripe stone fruit are interwoven with a marked mineral streak and a savory, salty edge. The finish is long, lively and very pure, tapering off with lingering notes of flowers, chalk and sea spray. This 2021 has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 7–10 years from the vintage, gaining complexity, hazelnut nuances and deeper texture while preserving its coastal freshness.
Production
Charles Ranch sits on a rocky, rolling hillside just 2 miles from the cold Pacific coastline at Fort Ross-Seaview, about 1,150 feet above sea level. The vines are deeply rooted in fractured, well-drained stone soils, in a cool-climate zone that stays above the fog line but remains strongly influenced by ocean winds and chilled nights. Planted more than forty years ago, these are among the oldest pre-phylloxera Chardonnay plantings along the Sonoma Coast, naturally yielding small crops of concentrated, mineral-driven fruit. Harvest is typically conducted by hand to protect the delicate berries and allow for strict selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, Raen favors a Burgundian-inspired, low-intervention approach: gentle pressing, fermentation with careful temperature control (often with a significant portion in oak), and élevage designed to preserve tension, purity and site expression rather than overt oakiness, resulting in a Chardonnay of precision, depth and remarkable clarity of terroir.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay’s combination of freshness, salinity and subtle richness makes it a superb partner for refined seafood and lighter, elegant dishes. Pair it with oysters, scallop crudo, poached lobster, butter-basted halibut, grilled prawns or simply prepared white fish with citrus and herbs. It also shines alongside roast chicken with lemon and thyme, creamy shellfish pastas, or soft-ripened cheeses like Brie, Camembert or a young goat cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) for optimal expression; a brief 30–45 minutes in the refrigerator before serving is ideal. The wine will open beautifully with air, so consider a light decant of 20–30 minutes for young bottles to allow the floral and mineral notes to fully unfurl.
Producer
Raen Winery is a small, quality-focused estate on the Sonoma Coast, founded by the Mondavi family’s next generation with a clear vision: to craft site-specific, Burgundian-inspired wines from some of the region’s most expressive coastal vineyards. Working in cool, wind-battered zones like Fort Ross-Seaview, Raen has quickly gained a reputation for precise, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that favor elegance, tension and age-worthiness over sheer power. Their Charles Ranch bottling taps into one of Sonoma Coast’s historic Chardonnay sites, showcasing the potential of old, pre-phylloxera vines in this high, maritime terroir. In a relatively short time, Raen has become an important voice in redefining modern Sonoma Coast wines, emphasizing finesse, transparency and a deep respect for place.
