Description
The 2021 Quintessa Methuselah (6L) is a commanding large-format expression of one of Napa Valley’s most revered estate red blends. Crafted entirely from estate-grown fruit in the heart of Rutherford, this 6-liter bottle is designed for true collectors, special occasions, and long-term cellaring. The 2021 vintage combines precision, purity of fruit, and elegant structure, showcasing Quintessa’s signature balance between power and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Quintessa shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with layers of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, and dark plum, framed by notes of graphite, violets, and crushed stone. Subtle tones of cedar, tobacco leaf, cocoa nibs, and sweet baking spices speak to its time in carefully selected French oak.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet refined, with a core of dark fruit—cassis, black cherry, and wild berries—wrapped in fine, velvety tannins. There’s a striking interplay between richness and freshness, driven by vibrant acidity and a mineral undercurrent from the Rutherford terroir. Hints of espresso, pencil shavings, and savory herbs unfold with air, leading to a very long, structured finish. In this Methuselah format, the wine will age slowly and gracefully; expect peak drinking to stretch well beyond two decades, with the potential to evolve beautifully for 25+ years under proper cellaring.
Production
Quintessa is an estate-driven wine sourced from a single, organically and biodynamically farmed property in the Rutherford AVA of Napa Valley. The rolling hills, varied exposures, volcanic and alluvial soils, and proximity to the Napa River create a complex mosaic of micro-terroirs that are individually harvested and vinified. Grapes are typically picked by hand in small lots at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before fermentation. Fermentation occurs in a combination of stainless steel and concrete, as well as oak vessels, to maximize both purity of fruit and textural complexity. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to integrate tannins and develop aromatic depth before being bottled, with the Methuselah format reserved for the most ageworthy, collectible releases.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Quintessa Methuselah is a natural centerpiece for grand dinners and celebrations. It pairs beautifully with prime rib, dry-aged ribeye, lamb racks with rosemary, venison, and other roasted or grilled red meats. It also complements dishes like wild mushroom risotto, truffle-tagged pastas, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given the large format and youthful vintage, decant generously—at least 2–3 hours, and longer for maximum aromatic development—using a wide-bottom decanter to allow the wine to fully unfurl.
Producer
Quintessa is one of Napa Valley’s benchmark estate wineries, founded in Rutherford with the vision of creating a single, definitive wine from a remarkable piece of land. Conceived as an integrated wine estate rather than a collection of vineyard sources, Quintessa quickly gained recognition for its Bordeaux-inspired, Cabernet-led blends that still speak distinctly of Rutherford and Napa. The estate has been a leader in organic and biodynamic viticulture in the region, emphasizing sustainability and respect for the land. Over the years, Quintessa has earned a strong international reputation, consistently garnering high critical acclaim and becoming a fixture in serious cellars around the world.
