Description

The 2021 Prinz Schönhell Großes Gewächs is a meticulously crafted dry Riesling that captures the precision and elegance of modern Rheingau winemaking. Sourced from the esteemed Schönhell vineyard, this VDP.GG bottling showcases both the cool, focused character of the 2021 vintage and the distinctive minerality of its hillside terroir. It’s a wine for those who appreciate tension, depth and energy in their whites, built to shine at the table and reward time in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Schönhell GG shows a pale lemon to light straw color with green highlights, hinting at its youthful freshness and vibrant acidity. The nose is wonderfully detailed: expect layers of citrus zest (lemon and grapefruit), green apple and white peach, supported by delicate floral notes of white blossom and a distinctive streak of stony minerality. On the palate, the wine is dry, precise and beautifully balanced, with a lively, linear acidity that carries flavors of lime, ripe apple, stone fruit and a saline, almost smoky mineral edge. The texture is both taut and refined, gaining weight and complexity as it opens in the glass. The finish is long, crystal clear and mouthwatering, with citrus and stone notes lingering. This 2021 has excellent aging potential; while already highly enjoyable, it will develop more nuance, honeyed tones and deeper minerality over the next 8–12 years, and potentially longer in good cellaring conditions.

Production
The Schönhell vineyard sits on elevated, hillside sites in the Rheingau, where cool nights and good air circulation help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity in the Riesling grapes. Soils are typically a mix of loess, loam and slate-influenced substrates, providing both water retention and excellent drainage, which contributes to the wine’s clear mineral backbone. Grapes are usually harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure only optimally ripe, healthy clusters are selected for this Großes Gewächs. In the cellar, Weingut Prinz focuses on gentle pressing, slow, temperature-controlled fermentation (often in stainless steel and/or large traditional vessels) and extended lees contact, all aimed at preserving purity of fruit, sharpening the expression of terroir and building understated, elegant structure without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This dry, structured Riesling is exceptionally food-friendly, pairing beautifully with refined dishes such as poached or grilled white fish, sushi and sashimi, scallops, ceviche and elegant poultry preparations. It also works very well with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, fresh goats’ cheese, vegetable-based dishes and classic German fare such as trout or pork with a light sauce. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F). Young bottles benefit from being opened 30–60 minutes in advance; a brief decant can help the wine unwind and reveal more aromatic complexity, especially in the first few years after release.

Producer
Weingut Prinz is a quality-focused estate in the Rheingau, known for its precise, terroir-driven Rieslings that have earned increasing recognition among critics and collectors. Over the years, the estate has steadily risen in stature, becoming a respected name within the VDP and a benchmark for contemporary, finely etched dry Rieslings from the region. The Schönhell Großes Gewächs bottling reflects the estate’s commitment to meticulous vineyard work, low yields and thoughtful, minimal-intervention cellar practices. Through this approach, Weingut Prinz has helped highlight the Rheingau’s potential not only for classic off-dry wines but also for world-class, ageworthy dry Rieslings that stand comfortably alongside the best in Germany.
