Description
The 2021 Prinz Berg Schlossberg Großes Gewächs is a precision-crafted dry Riesling from one of the Rheingau’s most dramatic and historic steep-slope vineyards. This is a wine for those who appreciate tension, minerality and elegance over sheer opulence. In the outstanding 2021 vintage, Weingut Prinz has captured the cool, linear character of the year in a Riesling that is both intensely expressive and built to age.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Berg Schlossberg Großes Gewächs shows a pale lemon color with green reflections that hint at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is finely etched and detailed: think white peach, Meyer lemon and green apple layered with crushed slate, wet stone, white flowers and a touch of herbal lift—something between lemon balm and fresh hay. With air, more nuance appears: hints of lime zest, white tea and a delicate smoky, flinty note.
On the palate, this is firmly dry, sleek and tightly coiled, with a racy spine of acidity that carries the flavors long across the tongue. Citrus and stone fruits are joined by a vivid saline minerality and a subtle phenolic grip, giving the wine structure and shape without any heaviness. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, leaving impressions of lime, stone and gentle spice. Still very youthful, this 2021 Großes Gewächs has significant aging potential; it should evolve beautifully over 8–15+ years, gaining texture, complexity and a more pronounced smoky, honeyed character while retaining its mineral core.
Production
Berg Schlossberg is one of the Rheingau’s most renowned steep vineyards, perched high above the Rhine on terraces of slate, quartzite and weathered rock that naturally limit yields and intensify character. The site’s poor, stony soils and excellent drainage, combined with south and southwest exposures, create ideal conditions for slowly ripening Riesling with pronounced minerality and finely etched acidity. At Weingut Prinz, the fruit for this Großes Gewächs is harvested by hand, with multiple passes through the vineyard to pick only optimally ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, Prinz favors a gentle, low-intervention approach: careful pressing, slow, cool fermentation—often partly in stainless steel and partly in traditional large oak—followed by extended lees contact to add texture and depth without obscuring the purity of fruit and terroir. The result is a focused, terroir-driven dry Riesling that speaks clearly of its site.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Berg Schlossberg Großes Gewächs is an excellent partner for refined, subtly aromatic cuisine. It pairs beautifully with shellfish (oysters, scallops, lobster), sashimi and crudo, grilled or steamed white fish, as well as lightly spiced Asian dishes such as sushi, tempura, ceviche, or Thai dishes with citrus and herbs rather than heavy chili heat. It also works well with roasted poultry, veal in light cream sauces, and vegetable-focused dishes featuring asparagus, fennel or artichokes, where its precision and structure shine. Serve well chilled but not icy—around 9–11 °C (48–52 °F)—to allow the aromas to open. Young bottles can benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe to soften the edges and reveal additional layers of fruit and minerality.
