Description

2020 Pierre Graffeuille et Matthieu Dumarcher Odyssée is a French red wine that brings together the precision of Bordeaux and the natural, terroir-driven sensibility of the Rhône. Conceived as a collaborative “journey” (hence the name Odyssée), it offers a refined yet approachable style that will appeal to both curious explorers and seasoned wine collectors. This cuvée stands out for its balance, purity of fruit, and careful craftsmanship, reflecting the shared vision of two highly respected figures in contemporary French wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Odyssée presents a deep ruby to garnet color with bright, youthful reflections at the rim. The nose opens with expressive, dark-berried fruit—think blackberries and ripe cherries—layered with hints of spice, dried herbs, and a subtle floral lift. Delicate notes of licorice, warm earth, and a touch of graphite or pencil shavings suggest a thoughtful élevage and the influence of both winemakers’ backgrounds. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins and a lively, well-integrated acidity that keeps the fruit fresh rather than heavy. Flavors of black and red berries are supported by savory nuances—garrigue, cracked pepper, and a gentle smokiness—leading to a long, harmonious finish. The 2020 vintage is delicious now with a brief aeration, but it also has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, developing more complexity and secondary notes of leather, forest floor, and dried fruit.

Production
Odyssée is crafted from carefully selected vineyards in France, with sites chosen for their well-drained soils and favorable exposures that promote slow, even ripening. The focus is on healthy, expressive fruit, often from sustainably or organically farmed parcels, harvested at optimal maturity to preserve both freshness and depth. In the cellar, the philosophy is one of gentle intervention: grapes are sorted meticulously, fermentation is conducted in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve aromatics, and extraction is managed with a light hand to emphasize finesse over power. Aging typically takes place in a combination of inert vessels and used oak, allowing the wine to gain texture and harmony without being dominated by wood.

Food & Serving
This red is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled steaks, duck breast, and hearty dishes such as cassoulet or slow-braised beef. It also works well with Mediterranean-inspired cuisine—herb-crusted pork, ratatouille, grilled vegetables, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open up fully, especially if you are serving it alongside richer, more savory dishes.

Producer
Odyssée is the result of a collaboration between Pierre Graffeuille—well known for his work in Bordeaux, particularly with prestigious châteaux—and Matthieu Dumarcher, an independent winemaker based in the Rhône Valley who has built a reputation for thoughtful, low-intervention wines. Their partnership brings together two complementary perspectives: the classical precision and structure of Bordeaux and the expressive, terroir-driven character of the Rhône. This joint project has attracted attention for its emphasis on authenticity, drinkability, and elegance, showcasing how cross-regional collaboration in France can yield wines that are both distinctive and deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship.
