Description

Bottled in an extraordinary 18-liter Melchior format, Petrolo’s Galatrona is one of Tuscany’s most coveted Merlot-based reds and a modern icon of Italian wine. Sourced from a single, high-altitude cru on the Petrolo estate in the Val d’Arno di Sopra, it combines the depth and opulence of top Merlot with the energy and structure that define great Tuscan reds. This rare large-format bottling is designed for collectors, grand celebrations, and long-term cellaring, offering an unforgettable centerpiece both on the table and in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Galatrona shows a deep, almost opaque ruby core with vivid purple highlights that hint at both concentration and youth. The nose is generous yet refined, offering layers of ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry, lifted by notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and sweet spices such as cocoa, clove, and vanilla from judicious oak aging. On the palate, the wine is plush and full-bodied, with a velvety texture wrapped around a core of dark, succulent fruit. Fine, polished tannins provide structure without harshness, while vibrant Tuscan acidity keeps everything fresh and poised. Flavors of black cherry, blueberry compote, mocha, licorice, and a touch of tobacco unfold slowly, leading to a long, lingering finish with mineral undertones. In a Melchior format, the evolution will be especially slow and graceful: this is a wine built to age for decades, gaining complexity, tertiary notes, and further harmony over time.

Production
Galatrona comes from a dedicated single vineyard on the Petrolo estate in Tuscany, set on elevated slopes with a mix of clay, galestro, and stony soils that naturally limit yields and intensify concentration. The Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cooler nights, allows Merlot to ripen fully while preserving aromatic freshness. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates, with careful sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the fermenters. Vinification usually involves fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks with gentle extraction to preserve finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barriques (a significant portion new) to build complexity, texture, and age-worthiness before this special large-format bottling is assembled.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Tuscan red calls for equally thoughtful food pairings: think dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game dishes, truffle risotto, or rich ragù over pappardelle. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit purity and aromatic nuance. Given the scale and youth of an 18-liter bottle, generous aeration is essential: if possible, decant several hours in advance, or serve progressively from the bottle over a long meal to let the wine open and reveal its full complexity.

Producer
Petrolo is an esteemed family-owned estate in Tuscany, located in the Val d’Arno di Sopra appellation between Florence and Arezzo, an area with a long but often under-the-radar viticultural history. Over the past few decades, Petrolo has become one of the region’s reference points for quality, particularly with Galatrona, which is widely regarded as one of Italy’s benchmark Merlots and a flagship of the so-called “Super Tuscan” movement. Through meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and precise, quality-focused winemaking, Petrolo has earned international acclaim and high critical scores vintage after vintage, cementing its reputation as a leading producer in contemporary Tuscan wine.
