Description
The 2021 Opus One in this rare 0.375L format distills one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wines into a perfectly sized bottle for intimate occasions or tasting explorations. Born from the legendary collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, Opus One is widely regarded as a benchmark for Bordeaux-style blends from Napa, and 2021 is already being hailed as a standout vintage. With its remarkable purity of fruit, poise, and depth, this wine sits comfortably alongside top Pauillac estates while retaining its unmistakably Californian character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Opus One shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple colour, hinting at both youth and intensity. The nose is refined yet expressive, layering ripe blackberry and blueberry with notes of dark chocolate, crushed violets, fresh herbs, graphite and a touch of cedar and fine oak spice. There’s a sense of clarity and precision to the aromas, with each element distinctly defined.
On the palate, this is full-bodied but beautifully balanced, with concentrated dark berry fruit wrapped in silky, ultra-fine tannins. Flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, and blueberry are interwoven with cocoa, espresso, tobacco leaf, graphite and a subtle savoury earthiness. The texture is polished and creamy, leading into a long, layered finish that lingers with notes of dark chocolate, spice and fresh herb. Though already impressive in its youth, the wine’s structure, acidity, and depth suggest an outstanding aging potential of 30+ years, even in half-bottle format, where it will evolve more rapidly and reward earlier drinking.
Production
Opus One is sourced from meticulously farmed estate vineyards in Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA, where gravelly, well-drained alluvial soils and a warm, sunny climate produce Cabernet-based wines of great power and finesse. The 2021 blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec, in the classic Bordeaux tradition. Grapes are hand harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted with extreme care, and fermented in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve aromatic purity and fine tannin structure. The wine then matures in French oak barrels (a significant portion new), where it develops its signature integration of fruit, oak and texture before being bottled, including in this special 0.375L half-bottle format.
Food & Serving
The 2021 Opus One is a natural match for refined, flavourful dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, lamb racks with rosemary, venison, slow-braised short ribs, or classic French dishes like beef tenderloin with truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or black truffle. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In this half-bottle format, a shorter decant of about 30–60 minutes is ideal in its youth to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to soften, while older bottles should be decanted gently just to remove any sediment.
Producer
Founded in 1978 as a visionary partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Napa pioneer Robert Mondavi, Opus One was conceived as a grand vin of Napa Valley, uniting Old World Bordeaux expertise with New World terroir. Situated in the heart of Oakville, the estate quickly became a reference point for luxury Cabernet-based blends, helping to cement Napa’s reputation on the global fine wine stage. Over the past decades, Opus One has consistently garnered critical acclaim, high scores and international recognition, and remains one of the region’s most sought-after and collectible wines, prized for its elegance, longevity and unwavering quality.
