Description

The 2021 Ökonomierat Rebholz Riesling Im Sonnenschein Grosses Gewächs BIO is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Pfalz’s most revered vineyards. Certified organic and crafted in a focused, uncompromising style, it marries ripe, sun-drenched fruit with striking mineral tension. As a Grosses Gewächs from the famed ‘Im Sonnenschein’ site, it represents the pinnacle of dry Riesling from this warm yet finely balanced German region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shines a pale lemon to light gold, with a crystalline brightness that hints at its precision and tension. The nose is immediately expressive: vibrant citrus (lemon zest, grapefruit and a touch of lime) is layered with notes of fresh green herbs like tarragon, hints of white peach, wet stone, and a subtle floral lift. On the palate, the 2021 vintage shows the cool, crisp character of the year, wrapped in a surprising juiciness that almost conceals the racy acidity. Expect lively citrus and stone fruit, a saline edge, and a serious, chalky and sandstone-derived minerality that runs through the wine from start to finish. Fine, almost tactile tannins give structure, while the finish is long, fresh and quietly powerful. This is a complex, tightly wound Riesling with significant aging potential—easily 10–15 years in a good cellar, during which it will gain more honeyed, smoky and tertiary nuances while retaining its backbone of acidity.

Production
The ‘Im Sonnenschein’ vineyard is a south-facing, sun-exposed slope on the Haardtrand, the transition between the Pfälzer Wald and the Rhine plain, lying at 160–225 metres above sea level with gradients of 5–20%. Here, Riesling thrives on geologically young, colourful sandstone soils, formed about one million years ago as the Queich river carried gravel from the Pfälzer Wald and deposited it on the slopes. The subsoil is a mix of sand, sandstone, loam and gravel—perfect for producing Rieslings of precision and mineral depth. Ökonomierat Rebholz farms these parcels organically and biodynamically, with low yields and careful hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, the must is handled gently and fermented slowly, typically in stainless steel and/or large neutral casks to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression, with minimal intervention to let the site’s character shine.

Food & Serving
This Grosses Gewächs is superb both as an elegant aperitif and at the table. Its bright acidity and minerality make it a natural partner for oysters, lobster, turbot, Dover sole and other fine white fish, whether simply grilled or served with delicate butter or citrus sauces. It also pairs beautifully with refined poultry such as turkey or Bresse chicken with mushrooms, as well as sushi and sashimi where its precision cuts through richness and complements umami. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C. Young bottles will benefit from a short decant of 30–60 minutes to open up the aromatics and soften the structure.

Producer
Ökonomierat Rebholz is one of the reference estates of the Pfalz, known for its rigorous, terroir-driven approach and dry, uncompromising style of winemaking. The estate has long championed organic and biodynamic viticulture, focusing on expressing the individual character of its top vineyards along the Haardtrand, including the renowned ‘Im Sonnenschein’ site. Over the decades, Rebholz has helped define the modern identity of Pfalz Riesling—precise, mineral and ageworthy—and is consistently counted among Germany’s leading producers, with numerous accolades for its Grosses Gewächs wines and its pioneering commitment to purity and authenticity in the region.
