Description
The 2021 Millemann Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a refined expression of one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most coveted terroirs, crafted in a fresh, classical Burgundy vintage. This wine captures the finesse, minerality, and understated power that have made Latricières-Chambertin a connoisseur’s favorite. As a Grand Cru from the northern Côte de Nuits, it offers a nuanced, ageworthy profile that rewards both contemplation and cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Latricières-Chambertin shows a luminous, medium ruby colour with garnet highlights developing toward the rim. The nose is finely etched rather than showy, opening with wild red berries, cranberry, and ripe cherry, followed by floral notes of rose petal and violet, layered with hints of underbrush, crushed stone, and subtle sweet spice.
On the palate, the wine is precise and tensile, with a silken texture supported by vibrant acidity and finely grained, chalky tannins. Flavours of redcurrant, pomegranate, and cherry are interwoven with savoury notes of forest floor, black tea, and a touch of graphite, reflecting the cool, stony site of Latricières. The finish is long, saline, and focused, suggesting excellent balance and poise. While already approachable with aeration in its youth, this 2021 has the structure to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Sourced from the esteemed Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru climat in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine comes from vineyards rooted in thin, well-drained soils rich in limestone and marl over a cool, breezy exposition. The terroir is known for producing wines of notable finesse and minerality rather than overt power. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting to ensure only perfectly healthy Pinot Noir berries make it to the cellar. Vinification follows traditional Burgundian methods, often with a portion of whole-cluster fermentation to enhance aromatic lift and structure, followed by a gentle cuvaison to avoid over-extraction. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—primarily used and a judicious portion of new oak—to refine the tannins and add subtle layers of spice, without masking the purity of fruit or the signature of the vineyard.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru’s purity and structure make it an elegant partner for refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast duck with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, veal with morel mushrooms, or game birds like partridge and pigeon. Earthy preparations—wild mushrooms, truffle risotto, or roasted root vegetables—highlight its savoury, mineral edge, while aged hard cheeses and mild washed-rind cheeses also work well. Serve at 14–16°C to preserve its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; older bottles should be decanted more gently, just before serving, to separate any sediment.
Producer
Millemann is a quality-focused Burgundian producer with a particular emphasis on expressing the character and nuance of individual climats through meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar. Working in one of the world’s most fragmented and prized wine regions, the domaine’s approach is guided by low yields, careful hand selection of fruit, and precise, terroir-driven winemaking. Their holdings in Grand Cru sites such as Latricières-Chambertin underline their ambition and their standing among attentive Burgundy lovers. While production is limited, Millemann’s wines have gained recognition for their clarity, balance, and faithful reflection of Burgundy’s most renowned terroirs.
