Description
The 2021 Millemann Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a luminous example of what happens when a top-tier Burgundy terroir meets a highly skilled, terroir-obsessed winemaker. Crafted in tiny quantities from one of the world’s most revered white wine appellations, this Chardonnay combines depth, precision, and tension in a way that already has collectors paying close attention. As one of Pierre Millemann’s earliest and most talked‑about releases, it captures both the power of Corton‑Charlemagne and the finesse of a modern, detail‑driven producer. What sets this wine apart is its rare combination of impressive fruit weight, grand cru concentration and a razor‑sharp mineral backbone, all framed by carefully chosen French oak. The 2021 cuvée was matured in two traditional 228L barrels—one from Allier and one from Tronçais oak—rather than the larger 500L format often seen in the region, giving a more finely tuned integration of wood and fruit. Corton‑Charlemagne has long been considered one of the world’s greatest white wine terroirs, and Millemann’s interpretation shows just how thrilling this Grand Cru can be in the hands of a winemaker with deep experience across France’s benchmark regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Millemann Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru shows a medium lemon hue with youthful brightness and a slight green glint, hinting at both concentration and freshness. Swirl the glass and you’ll find an aromatic profile that is at once inviting and complex: citrus zest and lemon curd mingle with notes of ripe apple, a touch of banana, and delicate hints of white flowers. Subtle layers of toasted hazelnut, fresh bread dough and fine oak spice reveal the influence of the Allier and Tronçais barrels without ever overshadowing the fruit.
On the palate, this is a tightly coiled, intensely focused Grand Cru with impressive mid‑palate weight. Flavors of lemon meringue, yellow orchard fruits and a whisper of exotic citrus are carried by a vibrant, almost chiselled acidity that gives the wine superb tension and drive. The texture is silky yet energetic, with a mineral line that runs from start to finish, culminating in a long, saline, citrus‑infused finish. Still very much in its youthful phase, this 2021 is built for the long haul; while already compelling in its precision and purity, it has the structure to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining additional creaminess, nutty nuances and complexity with time in bottle.
Production
Corton-Charlemagne sits on the upper slopes of the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune, where Chardonnay thrives on limestone-rich soils mixed with marl and stony debris, facing predominantly south to southwest. This elevated, well‑drained terroir delivers both ripeness and nerve, which is clearly reflected in the wine’s combination of fruit weight and acidity. Although detailed technical notes are not widely published for Millemann’s early vintages, it is evident that fruit selection is rigorous and yields are low, consistent with serious Grand Cru production. The 2021 was vinified with a focus on purity and precision—gentle pressing of the Chardonnay, a careful, temperature‑controlled fermentation, and élevage in two standard 228L Burgundy barrels, one crafted from Allier oak and the other from Tronçais. The choice of these fine‑grained forests and a sensitive approach to oak integration allow the wine’s chalky minerality and terroir expression to shine through rather than be dominated by wood.
Food & Serving
This Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru calls for refined, richly flavored dishes that can match its intensity and structure. Pair it with butter‑poached lobster, scallops in a delicate cream or citrus beurre blanc, turbot or sole meunière, or roasted chicken with morel or truffle jus. It also shines alongside veal in a light cream sauce, fine poultry terrines, and aged, subtly nutty cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or a well‑matured Gruyère. Serve at 11–13°C (52–55°F) to highlight its aromatics and tension; avoid serving too cold, as that will mute its complexity. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes can help the wine unfurl its citrus, floral and nutty nuances, while older bottles are best handled more delicately—simply open in advance and let them evolve quietly in the glass.
Producer
Pierre Millemann’s path to Burgundy Grand Cru bottlings is rooted in a broad and serious wine education across France’s classic regions. Raised between Anjou and Alsace in a family of passionate wine enthusiasts, he was mentored early on by René Renou, then president of the Institut National des Appellations d’Origine, which sharpened his focus on terroir as the foundation of great wine. After hands‑on work in vineyards and cellars in Germany, at Château Carbonnieux in Pessac‑Léognan, and at Champagne house Charles Heidsieck, he formalized his expertise with oenology diplomas in Champagne and Dijon, followed by key roles in several French regions, including as cellar master in the Jura. Since launching his own label in 2017, Millemann has quickly attracted attention by securing parcels and fruit from some of Burgundy’s most coveted sites—Corton-Charlemagne, Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares and Corton-Renardes among them. As a new but deeply experienced producer, his early vintages are already scarce and highly sought after, with critics and collectors alike viewing his work as one of the most exciting emerging stories in top-tier Burgundy.
