Description

The 2021 Millemann Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a finely etched expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered terroirs. Sourced from the legendary Clos de la Roche in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, this red Burgundy combines precision, depth, and refinement in a way only Grand Cru Pinot Noir can. The cooler, classical 2021 vintage lends an extra layer of freshness and tension, making this a wine of both charm in youth and real aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Millemann Clos de la Roche Grand Cru shows a luminous, medium ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose opens with pure red and dark berry notes—wild strawberry, morello cherry, and black raspberry—layered with rose petals, violets, and a touch of blood orange zest. Subtle earthy nuances of forest floor, dried leaves, and crushed rock mingle with fine oak tones of spice, clove, and a whisper of cedar. On the palate, the wine is precise and finely structured, with a silken texture supported by vibrant acidity and firm, chalky tannins typical of Clos de la Roche. Flavors of red cherry, cranberry, and blackcurrant unfold gradually, joined by savory hints of undergrowth, black tea, and warm baking spices. The finish is long, mineral-driven, and mouthwatering, promising graceful evolution. While already expressive with air, this Grand Cru will gain complexity and harmony over 10–20 years in a proper cellar, rewarding patience with ever more nuance and depth.

Production
Clos de la Roche is one of the great Grand Cru vineyards of Morey-Saint-Denis, marked by thin, limestone-rich soils over hard rock, excellent drainage, and an ideal south-east exposure that brings both ripeness and freshness. Millemann sources low-yielding, old-vine Pinot Noir from carefully selected parcels, with meticulous, largely manual work in the vineyard to ensure optimal fruit quality. Harvest is typically done by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to retain only the best bunches. In the cellar, fermentation is carried out in small vats, often with a portion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic complexity and structure, followed by gentle extraction to preserve finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a judicious portion of which are new, allowing the terroir to shine through while adding subtle layers of spice and texture.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru red Burgundy is a natural match for refined, savory dishes such as roast duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal in a light jus, or herb-crusted lamb. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-driven dishes, truffle risotto, and aged, semi-soft cheeses like Époisses or a well-aged Comté. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) in large Burgundy stems to fully showcase its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth can help the wine open up and soften the tannins; with more bottle age, a gentle, short decant mainly to remove sediment is recommended.

Producer
Millemann is a quality-driven Burgundy producer with a particular focus on expressing the nuance and individuality of the region’s most prized vineyards. Working with top-tier sites such as Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, the estate emphasizes meticulous viticulture and thoughtful, terroir-first winemaking. In the local context, Millemann has built a reputation for crafting wines that combine clarity, precision, and a restrained use of oak, allowing the character of each climat to speak clearly. Their bottlings from the Côte de Nuits, and especially from Grand Cru parcels, are sought after by enthusiasts who value both classic Burgundy elegance and the transparency of modern, sensitive winemaking.
