Description

The 2021 Millemann Chambertin Grand Cru is a refined expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered terroirs, captured in a fresh, delicately structured vintage. Crafted from Pinot Noir in the hallowed slopes of Chambertin, this Grand Cru marries power with precision, showing both youthful energy and classical poise. Its unique selling point lies in its combination of Grand Cru depth with the lifted, crystalline character of the 2021 vintage—offering purity of fruit, finely etched tannins, and striking minerality. Marked by its layered complexity and elegant structure, it stands out as a Burgundian red that is both approachable in youth and worthy of patient cellaring. Chambertin has long been synonymous with nobility in Burgundy, and this wine continues that legacy with a contemporary, terroir-focused style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Millemann Chambertin Grand Cru shows a luminous medium ruby core with garnet hints toward the rim—classic for finely made Pinot Noir from a cooler vintage. The nose is immediately expressive yet refined, offering notes of wild red cherries, ripe raspberries, and crushed strawberries, layered with rose petals, subtle forest floor, and a touch of spice reminiscent of white pepper and clove. Underneath, a mineral thread of wet stone and a hint of fine oak add depth without dominating. On the palate, this Chambertin is precise and finely textured rather than broad or muscular, reflecting the character of 2021. Bright red fruit—cranberry, cherry, and red currant—is framed by taut, silky tannins and vibrant acidity, giving the wine a lifted, almost aerial quality. Savory undertones of tea leaf, dried herbs, and a gentle earthiness emerge with air, leading into a long, elegant finish with lingering notes of spice and minerality. While already enticing after a short decant, this Grand Cru has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and deeper tertiary nuances with time in bottle.

Production
This Chambertin Grand Cru hails from the famed slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits, where thin limestone soils over marl and excellent drainage naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The cool Burgundian climate in 2021 preserved freshness and aromatic precision, while the Grand Cru exposure ensures optimal ripening of Pinot Noir. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal physiological ripeness, allowing for careful selection of bunches both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification leans toward a gentle, terroir-driven approach: a portion of whole clusters may be included to add aromatic lift and fine tannic structure, with a cool pre-fermentation maceration to enhance color and fragrance. Fermentation in small vats with indigenous or carefully selected yeasts is followed by élevage in French oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new oak to support rather than overshadow the wine’s inherent finesse and minerality.

Food & Serving
The 2021 Millemann Chambertin Grand Cru pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes that match its depth yet respect its elegance. Think roast duck with cherries, lamb saddle with herbs, veal tenderloin, or game birds such as pigeon or quail; it also works wonderfully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, or aged alpine cheeses like Comté and Beaufort. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. In youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps the wine open up and integrate its subtle oak and spice components; with additional bottle age, a brief, gentle decant will be sufficient to remove any sediment and allow the bouquet to fully blossom.

Producer
Millemann is a quality-focused Burgundy producer and négociant that places terroir expression at the center of its philosophy, working with some of the region’s most esteemed appellations, including Grand Cru vineyards such as Chambertin. Operating within the broader tapestry of Bourgogne, Millemann aims to showcase the diversity and nuance of Pinot Noir through careful sourcing, meticulous selection, and sensitive winemaking. While relatively discreet compared to some of the larger historical domaines, the house has earned the attention of enthusiasts looking for precise, contemporary interpretations of classic Burgundian sites. By combining traditional techniques with a modern understanding of vineyard and cellar work, Millemann contributes to Burgundy’s ongoing reputation as one of the world’s foremost regions for fine, age-worthy Pinot Noir.
