Description
The 2021 Langmeil Orphan Bank Shiraz is a powerful yet finely detailed Barossa red that showcases the region’s legendary old vines. Crafted from some of the oldest surviving Shiraz vines in the world, this wine delivers depth, complexity and a real sense of place. Named “Orphan Bank” after Langmeil’s remarkable effort to rescue and replant historic vines, it’s a compelling choice for collectors and lovers of classic Australian Shiraz.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Orphan Bank Shiraz is a deep, opaque crimson with a vibrant purple rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, unfolding with ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum, supported by notes of dark chocolate, licorice, clove and a gentle cedar-spice from quality oak. Subtle hints of dried herbs and violet add lift and complexity.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and richly textured, but with a refined structure that keeps everything in balance. Juicy black and blue fruits are wrapped in fine, chalky tannins, with well-integrated oak bringing cocoa, espresso and sweet spice. There’s an appealing freshness running through the core, giving drive to the long, persistent finish with echoes of black fruit, spice and a touch of savory earth. While already approachable with time in the glass, the wine has the concentration and structure to develop beautifully over 10–15 years in a good cellar, gaining further complexity and softness.
Production
The Orphan Bank Shiraz draws on old-vine Barossa fruit, including vines originally planted in the 19th century and painstakingly relocated to protect them from development. These deep-rooted vines, set in a mix of alluvial loams and more ancient, stony soils, yield naturally low crops of intensely flavored grapes that speak clearly of Barossa’s warm, dry climate and significant diurnal shifts. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest, ripest bunches. In the winery, the fruit is destemmed and fermented in open fermenters, with regular pump-overs or plunging to gently extract color, flavor and tannin. After fermentation, the wine is matured in a combination of new and seasoned oak (often a mix of French and American) to add structure and complexity while preserving the purity of the old-vine Shiraz fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes: think grilled or roasted lamb, ribeye steak, venison, slow-cooked beef cheeks, or a hearty beef and mushroom pie. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, aged hard cheeses like cheddar or Comté, and dishes featuring roasted root vegetables, rosemary and thyme. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–65°F) to show its full aromatic range. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to open up the nose and soften the tannins; older bottles can be decanted gently to remove sediment and enjoyed soon after.
Producer
Langmeil is one of the Barossa Valley’s most historically significant estates, with roots tracing back to the mid-19th century and early European settlement in the region. The winery is renowned for its custodianship of some of the world’s oldest surviving Shiraz vines, including the celebrated Freedom vineyard planted in 1843. Langmeil has built a reputation for producing characterful, terroir-driven wines that honor Barossa’s heritage while embracing thoughtful, modern winemaking. The Orphan Bank project, which involved rescuing and replanting old vines that were threatened by urban development, has become a symbol of the estate’s commitment to preserving viticultural history and has helped cement Langmeil’s status as a benchmark producer of premium Barossa Shiraz.
