Description

The 2021 La Mondotte Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a poised, finely etched expression of one of Bordeaux’s most coveted Right Bank terroirs. In a cooler, more classical vintage, La Mondotte has crafted a wine that leans into elegance, aromatic precision, and layered complexity rather than sheer power. This limited-production Grand Cru sits on prime limestone soils just east of Saint-Émilion, and has long been recognized as one of the benchmark micro-cuvées of the appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 La Mondotte shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple highlights, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with pure black cherry and ripe plum, followed by notes of wild raspberry, violet, and graphite, underpinned by subtle cedar, fine spice, and a touch of cocoa from well-integrated oak. As it breathes, more floral and mineral nuances emerge, a signature of its limestone plateau origins. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a beautiful tension: silky, refined tannins framed by lively acidity. Dark berry fruit—blackcurrant, blackberry, and damson—interplays with hints of licorice, crushed stone, and a delicate savory edge. The oak is polished and supportive rather than dominant, giving the wine a long, refined finish marked by freshness and a chalky, mouthcoating minerality. While already showing considerable charm in its youth, the structure and balance suggest solid aging potential of 12–20 years in a good cellar, with the wine gaining complexity, truffle notes, and additional silkiness over time.

Production
La Mondotte’s small, walled vineyard lies on the prized limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, where thin clay soils rest directly on hard limestone bedrock. This terroir naturally limits yields and imparts a distinctive mineral backbone and aromatic clarity. Vines—primarily Merlot with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc—are tended with meticulous, largely manual work, from strict pruning and green harvest to hand-picking in small crates at optimal ripeness. In 2021, careful selection was critical, and only the finest bunches were chosen on multiple sorting tables. The grapes are vinified plot by plot in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new), where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures on fine lees, allowing the texture to gain depth and polish without losing the vintage’s vibrant freshness.

Food & Serving
This 2021 La Mondotte is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes: think roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged beef, veal with truffle jus, or pigeon and game birds. It also pairs beautifully with earthy components such as mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and structure. For younger bottles, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; more mature bottles can be gently opened and decanted just before serving to separate them from any sediment.

Producer
La Mondotte is a tiny, jewel-like estate on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, owned and meticulously managed by the von Neipperg family, who are also behind Château Canon-La-Gaffelière and several other highly regarded Right Bank properties. Once relatively unknown due to its small size, La Mondotte rose to prominence in the 1990s with a series of highly rated, ultra-concentrated wines that showcased the extraordinary potential of its terroir. Today, the château is considered one of the stars of Saint-Émilion, known for combining old-vine intensity with precision and finesse. Its role in elevating the reputation of small, terroir-driven estates in the region has been significant, and its wines regularly attract critical acclaim and strong interest from collectors around the world.
