Description
The 2022 Kistler Stone Flat Vineyard Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is a refined, single-vineyard expression from one of California’s most respected Chardonnay specialists. Sourced from the cool, wind-swept Sonoma Coast, it balances California richness with a striking, almost Burgundian sense of precision and minerality. This is a Chardonnay crafted for those who appreciate depth, nuance, and a clear sense of place in their glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a pale to medium straw color with brilliant clarity and a slight greenish hue at the rim, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is detailed and layered: expect aromas of lemon zest, green and yellow apple, white peach, and Meyer lemon curd, wrapped in notes of crushed stone, subtle flint, and a gentle frame of toasted hazelnut and vanilla from well-integrated oak.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet remarkably focused, with a core of citrus and stone fruit—think nectarine and ripe pear—lifted by bright acidity. A saline, coastal minerality runs through the mid-palate, giving the wine tension and drive, while finely judged oak adds texture rather than heaviness. The finish is long, pure, and mouthwatering, with lingering notes of citrus oil, chalk, and a hint of brioche. This vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 7–10 years from release, gradually developing more nutty, honeyed complexity while retaining its underlying freshness.
Production
Stone Flat Vineyard sits in a cool, maritime-influenced pocket of the Sonoma Coast, where chilly ocean breezes and fog preserve acidity and extend the growing season. The vines dig into well-drained, stony soils that naturally limit yields and emphasize mineral-driven character in the fruit. Kistler farms these sites with meticulous attention, often using low-yielding selections and careful canopy management to achieve optimal ripeness at lower sugar levels. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in the cool of early morning to protect freshness, then whole-cluster pressed. Fermentation occurs in French oak barrels, largely using native yeasts, followed by aging on the lees with minimal intervention. The result is an elegantly textured, barrel-fermented Chardonnay that showcases terroir ahead of winemaking artifice.
Food & Serving
This Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is remarkably versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with simply prepared seafood—think seared scallops, halibut with lemon and herbs, or oysters Rockefeller—as well as roasted chicken, veal in light cream sauces, and richer vegetarian dishes like wild mushroom risotto or butternut squash ravioli with brown butter and sage. Soft, creamy cheeses such as triple-cream brie or a mild goat cheese also work well. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatics and tension; overly cold temperatures will mute its complexity. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply letting the wine open in the glass, helps the layers of fruit, minerality, and oak to fully unfold.
Producer
Founded in 1978, Kistler Vineyards has become one of the benchmark producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California, often cited in the same breath as top white Burgundy estates. The winery’s focus on single-vineyard bottlings, low yields, and traditional, barrel-fermented techniques has helped define a style of Sonoma Chardonnay that is both richly textured and finely balanced. Over the decades, Kistler has earned a reputation for meticulous vineyard sourcing—particularly along the cooler, coastal zones of Sonoma—and for wines that consistently receive high critical acclaim. Today, Kistler is regarded as a standard-bearer for terroir-driven Chardonnay in the region, with Stone Flat Vineyard representing one of its purest, most coastal expressions.
