Description
The 2021 Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grand Cru Magnum is a rare and highly coveted expression of one of Burgundy’s most legendary vineyards, presented in the superior magnum format for optimal aging. Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, this wine combines Musigny’s hallmark finesse and aromatic complexity with the precision and elegance that define Joseph Drouhin’s house style. From a cool, low-yielding vintage, it offers remarkable purity and tension, promising both early charm and long-term development.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Musigny Grand Cru shows a luminous, medium to deep ruby color with youthful purple reflections along the rim. The nose is refined and layered, offering an interplay of wild red berries, ripe Morello cherry, and raspberry coulis, supported by notes of rose petal, violet, and a delicate hint of peony. Subtle nuances of sweet spice, fine black tea leaf, forest floor, and a touch of sandalwood emerge with air, adding depth and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is both silky and precise, with a beautifully detailed texture that seems to glide while retaining a firm, mineral backbone. Flavors of red cherry, wild strawberry, and pomegranate sit over a core of fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Hints of orange zest, subtle oak spice, and crushed rock linger on the long, persistent finish. In magnum, aging potential is significant: while already approachable with careful aeration after several years in bottle, this 2021 Musigny Grand Cru should evolve gracefully for 15–25+ years, gaining further aromatic nuance and tertiary complexity.
Production
Sourced from the hallowed slopes of Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, this Grand Cru is rooted in thin, stony limestone soils with veins of clay and a notably well-drained, sun-exposed terroir that gives both power and delicacy to Pinot Noir. Joseph Drouhin farms these old vines with a strong commitment to sustainable and often organic and biodynamic principles, favoring low yields, meticulous canopy management, and predominantly manual work in the vineyard. Harvest is carried out by hand, with strict sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are vinified. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a gentle fermentation with a careful use of whole clusters depending on the vintage character, followed by aging in French oak barrels—largely from Drouhin’s own cooperage—with a judicious proportion of new oak. The aim is always to preserve Musigny’s signature finesse and aromatic purity rather than to imprint heavy wood influence.
Food & Serving
This Musigny Grand Cru is an exquisite partner for refined, delicately prepared dishes that mirror its elegance and depth. Ideal pairings include roast pigeon or duck with cherries, veal tenderloin with morel mushrooms, truffled poultry, or simply prepared lamb racks with herbs. It also shines alongside sophisticated vegetarian dishes such as mushroom risotto, black truffle pasta, or roasted root vegetables with thyme and sage. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Given its youth and complexity, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in the near term to unlock the wine’s floral and spice notes; as it matures, a shorter decant or careful splash-pour will suffice.
Producer
Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most respected family-owned domaines, with a deep presence across both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Over four generations, the Drouhin family has built a reputation for elegance, finesse, and terroir transparency, championing sustainable and often biodynamic viticulture long before it became widely adopted in the region. Their holdings in prestigious crus—Musigny among the very finest—underscore the domaine’s significance at the pinnacle of Burgundy. Joseph Drouhin’s wines are consistently lauded by critics and collectors alike for their balance, purity, and aging capacity, making this Musigny Grand Cru Magnum a benchmark reference for the appellation and a prized addition to any serious Burgundy cellar.
