Description

The 2021 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge in magnum format is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of Beaune’s most storied premier cru vineyards. Crafted from Pinot Noir grown on the sun‑drenched southern slopes of Beaune, this limited magnum release marks the 100th anniversary of Drouhin’s acquisition of Clos des Mouches. Offered in an elegant wooden case, it combines collectability, aging potential, and pure drinking pleasure in a format ideal for the table or the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Clos des Mouches Rouge shows a beautiful, deep ruby‑red hue with the limpid brightness that characterizes fine Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir. The nose is intense yet refined, opening on vibrant red fruits—Morello cherry, wild cherry, raspberry, and ripe blackberry—interwoven with hints of smoke and a delicate whisper of licorice. With air and time, more complex layers emerge: notes of crushed peppercorn, subtle tobacco leaf, underbrush, and forest floor add depth and nuance. On the palate, the first impression is one of clarity and precision. The texture is fleshy and mouth‑filling, with a firm but never harsh structure and a superb balance between ripe fruit, bright acidity, and fine, silky tannins. In youth, the wine feels lively and refreshing, driven by its red‑fruit core and mineral backbone. With age, it rounds out, gaining a velvety, almost “suede‑like” texture and a more architectural sense of detail, while the tannins become even more polished. The magnum format and the classically balanced 2021 vintage suggest a long drinking window: enjoy from its early expressive years, but expect it to evolve gracefully over 10–20 years or more under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Clos des Mouches lies at the southern end of the Beaune appellation, bordering Pommard, on gentle east/south‑east facing slopes that capture the morning sun and protect the vines from excessive heat. The terroir is classic Côte de Beaune: well‑drained limestone and marl with clay elements, imparting both finesse and structure to Pinot Noir. Joseph Drouhin owns the largest contiguous holding in this historic clos, with 14 hectares split evenly between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The estate is known for its commitment to sustainable, organic and biodynamic practices, with careful work in the vineyard and hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is brought to the cellar. Vinification typically emphasizes delicacy and terroir expression: gentle extraction, temperature‑controlled fermentation with a high proportion of whole berries or clusters depending on the vintage, and élevage in French oak (a judicious use of new oak) to frame, rather than dominate, the wine’s aromatic complexity and silky texture.

Food & Serving
This Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge is a versatile gastronomic wine, ideal with refined dishes that complement its aromatic complexity and texture. Think roast duck with cherries, herb‑roasted chicken, veal in a light jus, pork tenderloin with thyme, or classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin. It also pairs beautifully with earthy accompaniments like mushroom fricassee, truffle risotto, or a selection of semi‑soft and hard cheeses (Comté, Tomme, mild washed‑rind cheeses). Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. For this magnum, decant young vintages for 1–2 hours to open the bouquet and soften the structure; older bottles can be gently double‑decanted shortly before serving to preserve their more delicate tertiary notes.

Producer
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most respected family‑owned domaines, now run by the fourth generation. Over the past century, Clos des Mouches has become one of the estate’s signature vineyards and a reference point for Beaune premier cru wines, thanks to the visionary acquisition of multiple small parcels in the 1920s by Maurice Drouhin. Today, Joseph Drouhin is renowned for its elegant, terroir‑driven style, its pioneering commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, and a portfolio that spans from regional Bourgogne to some of the most coveted grands crus. The 100th‑anniversary bottling of Clos des Mouches in 2021, especially in magnum, underscores the domaine’s historic role in elevating Beaune’s reputation and its ongoing pursuit of finesse, balance, and age‑worthy complexity.
