Description
2021 Joan d'Anguera Finca l'Argatà Blanc is the inaugural white wine from one of Montsant’s most respected small estates, crafted entirely from old-vine Macabeu. This biodynamic, low-intervention white combines Mediterranean richness with the finesse and depth more often associated with top wines from Hermitage or even Condrieu. Produced in tiny quantities, it offers a rare glimpse into the white-wine potential of a vineyard otherwise famed for red Garnatxa.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Finca l'Argatà Blanc 2021 shows a deep straw to light golden hue, reflecting its barrel élevage and concentration from very low yields. The nose is complex and expressive, with layers of ripe stone fruit (apricot, yellow plum), baked apple, citrus peel, wild herbs and fennel, framed by notes of toasted hazelnut, subtle vanilla and a faint smokiness from the new French oak.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, yet balanced by fresh acidity and a distinct Mediterranean salinity. The old-vine Macabeu brings both weight and nuance: ripe peach and pear mingle with lemon curd, almond cream, honeycomb and a touch of spice from the barrel. The finish is long, savory and mineral-driven, suggesting serious gastronomic potential. Thanks to its structure, concentration and careful élevage, this 2021 has solid aging potential; it should drink beautifully now but will continue to evolve in bottle over the next 5–8 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes of nuts, beeswax and dried herbs.
Production
The fruit for Finca l'Argatà Blanc comes from a small parcel within the "Finca l'Argatà" vineyard in DO Montsant, a Mediterranean hillside terroir influenced by sun-drenched days, cool nights and poor, stony soils that naturally limit yields. While the vineyard is mainly planted to red Garnatxa, a very limited number of old Macabeu vines are carefully selected for this cuvée, resulting in extremely low yields and exceptional concentration. Farming is certified organic and fully biodynamic, with the estate eschewing synthetic treatments and focusing on soil vitality and biodiversity. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously, and then undergo both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in new French oak barriques using only native yeasts. The wine is aged on its lees in these same barrels for 11 months, with no fining or filtration and no sulfites added during fermentation or bottling, preserving the wine’s natural character and texture.
Food & Serving
This powerful, complex white is ideal for richly flavored Mediterranean and refined gastronomic dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted seafood (monkfish, turbot, sea bass), shellfish in butter or cream sauces, roasted chicken or guinea fowl, veal in light jus, and dishes featuring saffron, fennel or wild herbs. It also works wonderfully with aged hard cheeses and richer semi-soft cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance freshness and aromatic expression. Decanting for 20–30 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the oak and primary fruit to knit together and to reveal the full breadth of its aromatics.
Producer
Celler Joan d'Anguera is a historic, family-run estate based in Darmós, in the heart of Montsant, Catalonia, with roots dating back to 1820. Now in the hands of brothers Josep and Joan d'Anguera, the seventh generation of winegrowers, the domaine cultivates around 36 hectares of vineyards alongside olive and almond groves. Pioneers in shaping the reputation of the Montsant appellation, they have, since 2008, completely reoriented the estate toward organic and biodynamic farming and a more elegant, terroir-driven style. From the 2015 vintage they eliminated added sulfites during fermentation and bottling, relying only on traditional sulfur wicks in barrels, and they bottle without fining or filtration. Today, Celler Joan d'Anguera is widely regarded as one of Montsant’s benchmark producers, known for their purity of fruit, transparent expression of place and thoughtful, low-intervention approach.
