Description

2021 Jermann Vintage Tunina Venezia-Giulia is one of Italy’s most iconic white wines, a benchmark blend from the cool, hilly vineyards of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Crafted from a nuanced mix of international and indigenous grapes, it delivers both immediate pleasure and remarkable aging potential. First created in the mid-1970s, Vintage Tunina has become a modern classic, often cited as one of the finest white wines in Italy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Vintage Tunina shows a luminous straw-yellow color with subtle golden highlights, hinting at both concentration and complexity. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe peach and apricot mingle with citrus peel, acacia blossom, and wildflowers, supported by hints of fresh herbs, honey, and a delicate mineral undertone. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet finely balanced white, with a creamy, almost glyceric texture lifted by vibrant acidity. Flavors echo the nose—stone fruit, ripe pear, and lemon curd—woven together with notes of almond, white spice, and a saline, stony edge that brings precision to the long, elegant finish. While already generous and open in 2021, this cuvée is known for its longevity and can comfortably evolve in bottle for 8–12 years, gaining truffle, honeyed and nutty nuances over time.

Production
Vintage Tunina comes from select hillside parcels in the Venezia Giulia area of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where vineyards rest on classic ‘ponca’ soils—a mix of marl and sandstone that imparts both structure and minerality. The wine is a refined field blend, typically dominated by Sauvignon and Chardonnay, with indigenous Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, and the rare Picolit adding aromatic lift and texture. Grapes are hand-harvested, often slightly later than usual to ensure optimal ripeness and complexity, but without noble rot. After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place primarily in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve purity of fruit and terroir, followed by maturation on the lees, which enhances depth, mouthfeel, and the wine’s ability to age gracefully.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile gastronomic white that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as lobster, scallops, turbot, and shellfish pastas, but also complements risotto (especially with saffron or seafood), truffle dishes, roast poultry, veal in delicate sauces, and aged or semi-hard cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to capture both its aromatic complexity and textural richness. For the 2021 vintage, a brief decant of 20–30 minutes in a medium-sized carafe can help the bouquet open fully, especially if served within the first few years of release.

Producer
Jermann is a leading name in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and a reference point for top-quality Italian white wine. The estate traces its roots back to the late 19th century, when founder Anton Jermann emigrated from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and settled in Farra d’Isonzo. The real turning point came in the 1970s under Silvio Jermann, whose innovative vision and meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar elevated the estate to international acclaim. Launched in 1975, Vintage Tunina quickly became Jermann’s flagship and one of Italy’s most decorated whites, regularly receiving top national awards such as Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri and strong international ratings. Today, Jermann is celebrated for combining Friuli’s distinctive terroir with precision winemaking, producing wines that are both characterful and world-class.
