Description
The 2021 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Rutherford is a refined, estate-grown expression from one of Napa Valley’s most historic properties. Crafted under the direction of Philippe Bascaules (also Managing Director of Château Margaux), it marries classic Rutherford Cabernet power with precision and elegance. Honouring the legacy of John Daniel Jr. and the famed Inglenook Cask Wines program begun in 1949, this cuvée continues a tradition that helped define Cabernet Sauvignon’s prestige in Napa.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon shows an opaque, deep ruby hue that hints at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with layered aromas of ripe cassis and blackberry, followed by notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and finely shaved cedar, with subtle undertones of graphite and baking spice as it unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet impeccably composed, with a focused core of blackcurrant and black plum supported by hints of blackberry compote, mocha, and tobacco leaf. The tannins are silk-smooth but structured, carrying the fruit along a vibrant line of freshness that keeps the wine energetic rather than heavy. A lively acidity and finely polished texture lead into a long, harmoniously built finish that crescendos with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, and cedar. While already charming in its youth, this vintage has the balance and structure to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
The fruit for this Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced exclusively from Inglenook’s organically farmed estate vineyards in Rutherford, one of Napa Valley’s most prized subregions. The terroir here combines well-drained alluvial soils with Rutherford’s signature dust, yielding Cabernet of depth, perfume, and finely grained tannins. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, ensuring meticulous selection in the vineyard and at the winery. While historically vinified as a pure Cabernet Sauvignon aged in American oak, the modern iteration is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon artfully blended with small proportions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec, depending on the character of the vintage. Fermentation and élevage are carried out with a focus on clarity of fruit and textural finesse, with the wine matured in French oak barrels to enhance complexity, structure, and aromatic nuance.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with rich, savoury dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb with herbs, braised short ribs, or game birds with a red wine reduction. It also complements aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano and mushroom-based dishes that echo its earthy, cedary notes. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine fully express its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins; as it develops with age, a shorter decant may be sufficient simply to let it open.
Producer
Inglenook is one of Napa Valley’s founding estates, established in the late 19th century by sea captain and entrepreneur Gustave Niebaum, who helped introduce and champion Cabernet Sauvignon in the region. His vision for fine, estate-grown wines was later advanced by his descendant John Daniel Jr., whose legendary mid-20th-century Inglenook Cabernets—including the iconic 1941 bottling from Bordeaux cuttings—remain benchmarks in Napa’s history. Today, under the stewardship of Francis Ford Coppola and the winemaking guidance of Philippe Bascaules, Inglenook stands as a reference point in Rutherford, known for combining Old World sensibility with New World fruit purity. Its Cabernet Sauvignon is distributed via the prestigious Place de Bordeaux alongside some of Napa’s most revered names, underscoring the estate’s enduring significance and reputation for quality.
