Description

2021 Giodo La Quinta Toscane is a refined Sangiovese that offers a more immediately approachable, elegant counterpoint to Giodo’s powerful Brunello di Montalcino. Sourced from a single, small vineyard and aged with a gentle touch of oak, it showcases crystalline red fruit, freshness, and precision. Named after Giodo’s fifth planted Sangiovese vineyard, “La Quinta” celebrates both site expression and the contemporary, detail-obsessed style of Carlo Ferrini in the hills of Montalcino.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 La Quinta shows a vibrant, medium ruby hue with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose is lifted and expressive, with pure aromas of fresh red cherries and wild strawberries, supported by hints of cocoa, milk chocolate, and a subtle nuttiness reminiscent of toasted hazelnuts. Gentle floral notes and a touch of spice underline the wine’s finesse rather than power. On the palate, it is polished and poised, with crisp, juicy red berry fruit framed by sleek, high-quality tannins. The oak influence is deliberately restrained, allowing the Sangiovese’s natural vibrancy and acidity to shine through, lending a mouthwatering, almost crunchy freshness. Flavors of cherry, red plum, and a fine vein of chocolate carry into a long, clean finish with a delicate savory edge. While wonderfully drinkable now, especially for those who enjoy energetic, fruit-driven Tuscan reds, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for up to 8–10 years in a good cellar.

Production
La Quinta comes from Giodo’s fifth planted Sangiovese vineyard, a tiny 3.5-hectare parcel situated at about 300 meters above sea level with a southeast exposure in the Brunello di Montalcino area. The terroir is defined by poor clay soils mixed with small stones, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor while preserving acidity and finesse. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then vinified with a focus on purity of fruit and elegance. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in large oak vessels of 500 and 1,200 liters, a choice that reduces the impact of wood compared with classic Brunello élevage and allows the Sangiovese’s aromatic detail and freshness to remain front and center.

Food & Serving
This wine’s bright red fruit and polished tannins make it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle al ragù, grilled lamb chops with herbs, roast chicken, or pork loin with rosemary and garlic, and it also complements mushroom-based risottos and aged Italian cheeses like Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up its floral and nutty nuances, though it can also be enjoyed immediately after pulling the cork.

Producer
Giodo was founded by renowned Italian oenologist Carlo Ferrini, one of Tuscany’s most respected consultants, as his personal, family-driven project in Montalcino. The name “Giodo” is a tribute to his parents, Giovanna and Donatello, and reflects his philosophy of pursuing absolute quality by perfecting every detail from vineyard to bottle. Ferrini’s journey in Montalcino began in 2002, when, after extensive research, he acquired his first hectare in the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino appellation. Today, the estate encompasses around six hectares of vines between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo, a site that combines ideal exposure, altitude, and soil types for Sangiovese. Framed by a dramatic cypress-lined entrance and panoramic views toward Monte Amiata, Giodo has quickly become one of the most acclaimed boutique producers in the region, known for its precise, modern yet classically rooted expressions of Brunello and IGT Toscana wines.
