The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe blackberries, blueberries, and dark cherries at the forefront, supported by notes of licorice, cocoa, violets, and warm Mediterranean herbs. Subtle hints of graphite, baking spices, vanilla, and a touch of toasted oak speak to its time in barrel without overshadowing the fruit. Production
Mas de Can Blau is sourced from carefully selected, low-yielding vineyards in Montsant, a region that wraps around Priorat and shares many of its dramatic landscapes. The vines—often older plantings of traditional Mediterranean varieties—grow on a mosaic of soils, including limestone, clay, and the slatey, schistous llicorella that gives depth and mineral tension to the wine. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both power and balance, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. After destemming and a temperature-controlled fermentation to extract color, flavor, and structure, the wine undergoes extended maceration and is then aged in predominantly French oak barrels. This careful élevage adds complexity, texture, and spice while allowing the character of Montsant’s terroir and the intensity of the old vines to shine through.
