Description

The 2021 Famille Perrin Gigondas L'Argnée Vieilles Vignes is a striking expression of old-vine Grenache from one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected families. Sourced from tiny, centenarian parcels, this cuvée captures Gigondas’ wild elegance in a finer, cooler-vintage style. It is a limited, characterful red that will appeal to collectors and Rhône enthusiasts alike. What sets L’Argnée apart is its exceptionally old, mostly pre-phylloxera vines, rooted in sandy soils that give the wine remarkable finesse and aromatic lift. In the 2021 vintage, the wine shows precision and freshness without losing its depth and intensity. Historically, these ancient vines are among the oldest Grenache plantings in Gigondas, making this bottling an important reference point for the appellation’s heritage and potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 L’Argnée Vieilles Vignes is a deep, shimmering ruby with violet reflections, showing the concentration of low-yielding old vines yet with a certain brightness that hints at the vintage’s freshness. The nose is refined and expressive, with layers of wild raspberry, black cherry and crushed strawberry interwoven with notes of garrigue, dried thyme, lavender and rose petals. Subtle hints of white pepper, licorice, blood orange zest and warm stones add complexity as it opens in the glass. On the palate, this is a poised and finely etched Gigondas rather than a blockbuster: medium to full-bodied, with pure red and dark berry fruit, a silky, almost weightless texture, and very fine-grained tannins. The old vines bring impressive depth and length, while the cooler 2021 vintage contributes refreshing acidity and a precise, mineral line through the finish. Savory undertones of dried herbs, tea leaf and a touch of cocoa linger long after each sip. This 2021 has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 8–12 years, possibly longer in good cellaring conditions, gaining complexity, softer tannins and more truffle, leather and dried flower nuances over time, while remaining very approachable in its youth due to its elegance and balance.

Production
L’Argnée comes from minute parcels of very old, largely ungrafted Grenache vines planted on sandy, well-drained soils in Gigondas—an atypical terroir in an appellation often associated with more stony, rugged terrain. The sand and age of the vines naturally reduce yields and enhance aromatic delicacy, finesse and a sense of transparency to place. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used. Vinification is gentle and respectful: typically using a high proportion of whole clusters to preserve freshness and structure, with fermentation in concrete vats or traditional tanks and careful temperature control to avoid over-extraction. The wine is then aged in large neutral vessels—such as foudres and/or older barrels—to polish the tannins and integrate the components without marking the wine with overt oak, allowing the voice of the old vines and Gigondas terroir to shine through.

Food & Serving
This refined yet characterful Gigondas pairs beautifully with dishes that highlight Mediterranean flavors and herbs. Think herb-crusted lamb chops, slow-braised lamb shanks, duck breast with cherries, roasted game birds, or a classic Provençal daube. It also works well with grilled vegetables, ratatouille, mushroom dishes and aged, hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps the wine fully unfurl its aromatics and soften the structure; as it gains a few years of bottle age, a shorter, gentle decant just to remove sediment will usually suffice.

Producer
Famille Perrin is one of the Rhône Valley’s benchmark producers, best known as the family behind Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Over several generations, the Perrin family has built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, an early and enduring commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, and an unusually deep understanding of the Southern Rhône’s diverse terroirs. In Gigondas, they have become key ambassadors for the appellation through their work with exceptional sites like L’Argnée, whose pre-phylloxera vines are both a viticultural treasure and a living link to the region’s history. Their wines regularly receive high critical acclaim and are widely regarded as references for finesse, authenticity and longevity in the Southern Rhône.
