Description

The 2021 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Spätlese is a benchmark German Riesling from one of the most revered estates on the planet. Sourced from the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard in the Saar, it marries filigree delicacy with depth, intensity and a crystalline sense of place. This is a classic, finely sweet Spätlese that showcases why Egon Müller’s wines routinely achieve record prices at auction and near-perfect scores from the world’s top critics.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Scharzhofberger Spätlese shows a pale, luminous straw-yellow hue with subtle green reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose is strikingly pure and focused: flinty and slate-driven at first, then opening to layers of lime zest, white peach, green apple, grapefruit and delicate notes of white flowers, with a whisper of honeycomb and herbs. There is a cool, stony undertone that runs through the aromatics, evoking crushed slate and wet rock after rain. On the palate, this Spätlese is both precise and generous: juicy stone fruit and citrus are wrapped in a beautifully fine, dancing acidity that keeps the natural sweetness impeccably balanced. Expect flavors of ripe peach, mirabelle, mandarin and lemon oil, underlined by a salty, mineral backbone and a long, shimmering finish that is both airy and deeply persistent. The texture is silky yet weightless, with the signature Saar tension that prevents any sense of heaviness. While already captivating in its youth, the 2021 has a remarkable aging potential: over the next 20–30 years (and likely longer in ideal cellaring conditions), the wine will gain in complexity, developing notes of beeswax, dried apricot, candied citrus peel and petrol while retaining its vibrant core.

Production
The Scharzhofberg vineyard in the Saar is one of Germany’s most storied sites, characterized by steep slopes, cool climate and weathered Devonian slate soils that impart trademark precision and minerality to Riesling. The estate farms its parcels with the philosophy that true quality is created in the vineyard, using meticulous canopy management, low yields and rigorous selection at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are brought in. Harvest is done by hand, often in multiple passes through the vineyard to pick berries at the optimal Spätlese ripeness, including small amounts of botrytized fruit when nature permits. Vinification at Scharzhof is deliberately traditional and minimalist: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and élevage in large, old German oak casks (Fuder) in cool cellars. Intervention is kept to an absolute minimum so that the nuances of the Scharzhofberg terroir can express themselves with clarity, purity and finesse.

Food & Serving
This elegant, finely sweet Spätlese is exceptionally versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with spicy and aromatic cuisines such as Thai or Vietnamese dishes featuring lemongrass, ginger and chili, as well as with sushi, sashimi and refined shellfish preparations like scallops or langoustines. It also shines alongside classic German fare such as roast pork with crackling, smoked trout, or soft, creamy cheeses like young goat cheese or mild blue. For a more indulgent match, try it with fruit-based desserts (apricot tart, lemon tart, poached pears) that are not overly sweet. Serve well chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to emphasize freshness and minerality. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but opening the bottle 30–60 minutes before serving or using a gentle splash decant can help the aromatics unfurl, especially in its first few years.

Producer
Egon Müller is one of the most iconic names in the world of fine wine, and without question a towering reference for German Riesling. The family estate, Weingut Egon Müller-Scharzhof, is based in Wiltingen on the Saar and farms around 8 hectares, with 7 hectares in the famed Scharzhofberg and full ownership of the renowned Wiltinger Braune Kupp (bottled under the ‘Le Gallais’ label). Over generations, Egon Müller has become synonymous with nobly sweet Rieslings of extraordinary finesse, longevity and rarity—wines that frequently command record-breaking prices at the Trier auctions and consistently garner scores approaching 100 points from leading critics such as Robert Parker and James Suckling. Since 2000, cellar master Stefan Fabian has worked alongside the Müller family, maintaining a staunchly traditional, low-intervention approach that lets the Saar’s cool climate and slate soils speak clearly. The estate’s wines—from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese—are celebrated worldwide for their purity, balance and almost unparalleled aging potential.
