Description

The 2021 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Auslese is a benchmark sweet Riesling from one of the most revered estates in the world. Sourced from the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard in the Saar, this wine marries piercing minerality with luxurious sweetness in a way very few producers can match. With its rarefied pedigree, tiny production and near-mythical auction prices, this Auslese sits firmly among the most collectible white wines on the planet.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Scharzhofberger Auslese is pale to medium lemon-gold, with a bright, youthful sheen that hints at its immense aging potential. The nose is both crystalline and deeply layered: flinty, stony aromas of broken slate and wet rock mingle with fresh lemon zest, lime oil, white peach, ripe pear and a whisper of pineapple, framed by delicate notes of white flowers and honeycomb. On the palate, this is generous yet supremely refined, with a filigree texture and striking precision. Intense citrus and stone fruit are wrapped in a cloak of fine botrytis sweetness, balanced by electric acidity and a profound salty, mineral edge. The finish is long, crystalline and mouthwatering, echoing with lemon juice, crushed slate and a touch of crystallized ginger. While already captivating in youth, this Auslese is built for the long haul and will evolve beautifully for several decades—30+ years in a good cellar—gaining complexity, depth and a more honeyed, smoky profile over time.

Production
The grapes for this Auslese come from the famed Scharzhofberg vineyard in the Saar, a steep, slate-rich slope whose cool climate and poor, stony soils produce Rieslings of exceptional tension and finesse. The marginal conditions and long ripening season allow for the development of perfectly mature grapes, often touched by noble rot, while still preserving bracing acidity. Harvest is done entirely by hand, with meticulous selection of bunches and individual berries at multiple passes through the vineyard to capture only the finest, most concentrated fruit for Auslese. In the cellar, Egon Müller follows a very traditional, minimalist approach: gentle pressing, slow spontaneous (indigenous) fermentation, and élevage in large, old oak foudres that impart no overt oak flavor. Intervention is kept to an absolute minimum, allowing the Scharzhofberg terroir, vintage character and Riesling grape to speak with utmost clarity.

Food & Serving
This Auslese is wonderfully versatile at the table, excelling with rich or spicy cuisine and refined desserts. Try it with foie gras terrine, pâté en croûte, or blue cheeses like Roquefort and Stilton, where its sweetness and acidity cut through richness. It also shines alongside spicy Asian dishes—think Thai curries, Szechuan chili dishes or aromatic Vietnamese cuisine—as well as fruit-driven desserts, citrus tarts and delicately prepared stone-fruit pastries. Serve well chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), in a small white-wine or Riesling glass. Young bottles benefit from 20–30 minutes in the glass to unfurl their aromatics; decanting is generally not necessary but a slow, careful pour and a bit of air will help reveal the full complexity.

Producer
Egon Müller is a name that commands almost unmatched respect in the world of fine wine. The estate, based at Scharzhof in the Saar, farms around 8 hectares, with roughly 7 hectares in the hallowed Scharzhofberg vineyard, one of Germany’s most celebrated Riesling sites. Another key holding is the Wiltinger Braune Kupp, owned entirely by the estate and bottled under the Le Gallais label. Winegrowing here is rooted in a philosophy that quality is created in the vineyard: low yields, painstaking manual work and strict selection are the norm, while the cellar work remains deliberately traditional and restrained. Over the years, Egon Müller’s nobly sweet Rieslings—particularly from great vintages—have achieved record prices at the Trier wine auctions, and critics such as Robert Parker and James Suckling regularly score the top wines in the very high 90s, often flirting with a perfect 100 points. This combination of history, terroir and unwavering quality has cemented Egon Müller as arguably the reference point for Saar Riesling and one of the foremost white wine producers in the world.
