Description

The 2021 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Wachenheimer Böhlig Premier Cru is a beautifully sculpted dry Riesling from one of the Pfalz region’s most characterful sites. This is a wine that marries richness and precision, offering ripe, pure fruit woven tightly with mineral depth and refined acidity. Crafted from biodynamically grown grapes and classified in a Burgundian-style quality pyramid, it stands as a benchmark for serious, ageworthy Pfalz Riesling. Positioned as a Premier Cru within Bürklin-Wolf’s hierarchy, Wachenheimer Böhlig showcases the unique personality of its sandstone- and limestone-rich soils. The estate is a pioneer in adopting Burgundy-inspired vineyard classifications in Germany, emphasizing terroir and site expression long before it became widespread. This bottling captures the historical shift toward dry, single-vineyard Rieslings of Grand Cru calibre in the Mittelhaardt.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Wachenheimer Böhlig Premier Cru appears pale lemon to light straw with a youthful, crystalline brightness that hints at its energy and purity. Swirling reveals a slight viscosity, promising both depth and structure. The nose is finely etched and layered: ripe citrus (lemon zest, grapefruit), white peach and crisp green apple are lifted by notes of wet stone, chalk dust and a touch of smoky flint. Subtle herbal and earthy nuances—think fennel frond, chamomile and a whisper of wild herbs—add complexity, along with a delicate hint of white flowers. On the palate, the wine is rich yet strikingly precise, with a focused, linear drive. Juicy stone fruit and citrus are carried on a backbone of elegant, ripe acidity that keeps the wine taut and mouthwatering. The limestone imprint shows as a deep, salty-edged minerality and a powerful, almost tactile earthiness. Texture is both creamy and finely knit, thanks to extended lees aging in large old oak, finishing with a very long, thrillingly persistent aftertaste that oscillates between fruit, mineral and savory herb notes. This 2021 has significant aging potential. While already highly enjoyable in its youth for its vibrancy and tension, its structure, acidity and concentration suggest it will evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more, gaining honeyed, nutty and petrol nuances while preserving its core of minerality.

Production
The Wachenheimer Böhlig vineyard, covering just under 5 hectares, is one of the few sites in the Mittelhaardt characterized by weathered sandstone and limestone soils. This combination provides excellent drainage, deep mineral supply and consistent water availability—ideal for producing concentrated, terroir-driven Riesling. Its south-facing slope ensures optimal sun exposure, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while preserving freshness. Grapes for this Premier Cru are farmed biodynamically, harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted to ensure only the healthiest, most expressive fruit is used. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in large, old oak casks, a traditional approach that highlights the character of the site rather than new wood influence. The wine then matures on its fine lees in these same neutral oak vessels until bottling, building texture, integration and aromatic complexity while retaining a precise, mineral-driven profile.

Food & Serving
This dry Riesling is a superb partner for fine seafood and delicate yet flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with fresh mussels, lobster, crab meat and other shellfish, as well as trout and other freshwater fish—whether simply grilled, steamed or served with light herb or citrus-based sauces. It also works well alongside sushi, sashimi, ceviche and refined vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel or fresh herbs. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to balance its richness and highlight its mineral tension. Younger bottles benefit from a brief decant of 20–30 minutes to allow the aromatics to unfurl; older, cellared examples should be handled gently and may only need a light splash into a decanter, if at all, to preserve their more delicate, mature nuances.

Producer
Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is one of the most historic and respected estates in the Pfalz, with roots dating back to the 16th century. Based in Wachenheim, the winery holds parcels in many of the Mittelhaardt’s most renowned vineyards in Forst, Deidesheim, Ruppertsberg and Wachenheim itself. Over the last decades, the estate has played a leading role in redefining German dry Riesling, championing single-vineyard bottlings and a Burgundy-inspired hierarchy of sites (including Premier and Grand Cru designations) to emphasize terroir. As a member of the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter), Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is recognized as a reference producer in the region, though the estate follows its own classification approach rather than the Grosses Gewächs terminology. Their early and committed shift to biodynamic viticulture, along with consistently high critical acclaim, has cemented their reputation as one of Germany’s foremost Riesling specialists.
