Description
The 2021 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Ruppertsberger Riesling is a brilliant example of dry Pfalz Riesling that balances charm, elegance, and a clear sense of place. Sourced from the renowned Ruppertsberg vineyards in the Mittelhaardt, it offers impressive complexity and finesse at a very attractive price-to-quality ratio. Crafted under the Burgundian-inspired classification model, this wine showcases how terroir-driven, village-level Riesling can be both characterful and highly approachable.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling typically shows a pale to medium lemon-yellow hue with youthful brightness and clarity. The nose opens a touch wild and energetic, then quickly focuses into a clean, precise bouquet of crushed stone, wet slate, and delicate white flowers, supported by classic Riesling notes of citrus zest, green apple, and hints of white peach.
On the palate, it is dry, supple, and beautifully rounded, with a juicy, fruit-driven core wrapped in a refined, elegant structure. Lively acidity frames flavors of lemon, lime, crisp apple, and subtle stone fruits, while a distinct salty, crystalline minerality runs through the mid-palate into the finish. The finish is long, slightly spicy, and stimulating, with a fine herbal and floral echo. Enjoyable now for its freshness and charm, it also has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 5–8 years, developing more complexity, softer edges, and deeper mineral and honeyed nuances over time.
Production
The Ruppertsberg vineyards lie in the heart of the Pfalz’s Mittelhaardt, an area known for its warm, relatively dry climate and diverse soils rich in sandstone, limestone, and loess. This combination gives Riesling both ripeness and a pronounced mineral backbone. Dr. Bürklin-Wolf farms its vineyards with meticulous attention to terroir, often using low yields and careful vineyard work to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Grapes are harvested selectively, typically by hand, to bring in only healthy, perfectly ripe fruit. In the cellar, the estate follows a Burgundian-influenced philosophy: gentle pressing, cool, controlled fermentations (often in stainless steel and/or large traditional casks), and a focus on preserving purity, texture, and site expression rather than overt winemaking signatures. The result is a dry Riesling that clearly reflects its origin in Ruppertsberg.
Food & Serving
This Ruppertsberger Riesling is highly versatile at the table and pairs especially well with fresh seafood, shellfish, and delicately spiced dishes. Think steamed mussels, ceviche, grilled prawns, sushi and sashimi, or lightly spiced Asian cuisine such as Vietnamese salads and Thai dishes with citrus and herbs. It also works beautifully with white meats, roast chicken, pork tenderloin, and vegetarian plates featuring asparagus, fennel, or goat cheese. Serve well-chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromatic and mineral nuances to unfold. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe or a large glass can help the wine open up and reveal its more floral and spicy details.
Producer
Weingut Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is one of the most historically important and respected estates in the Pfalz, with roots dating back to the 16th century. Based in Wachenheim, the winery owns prime parcels in some of the region’s most celebrated sites in Forst, Deidesheim, Ruppertsberg, and Wachenheim, and has long been a benchmark for dry, terroir-driven Riesling. A member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter), Bürklin-Wolf helped pioneer a Burgundian-style classification system in Germany, emphasizing vineyard hierarchy (from village wines to Premier Cru and Grand Cru equivalents) and the expression of individual “Lagen.” Known for its commitment to quality, organic/biodynamic principles, and site transparency, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf consistently produces some of the most acclaimed dry Rieslings in the Pfalz and has played a key role in raising the profile of German Riesling on the global stage.
