Description

The 2021 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Ruppertsberger Hoheburg Premier Cru is a dry, site-expressive Riesling from one of Pfalz’s most prized vineyards at the foot of the Mittelhaardt hills. Sourced from a top Premier Cru (Erste Lage) parcel with distinctive sandstone soils, it delivers a compelling mix of power, purity and refined minerality. Drawing on a Burgundian-inspired quality hierarchy, this wine showcases how terroir-driven Riesling from Pfalz can rival the great white wines of Europe in complexity and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Ruppertsberger Hoheburg Premier Cru Riesling shows a luminous pale straw color with subtle green highlights, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is initially a touch wild and intriguingly complex, opening with notes of crushed stone, wet slate and flint before revealing more classic Riesling aromas: white blossom, lime zest, ripe stone fruits and a hint of herbal spice. On the palate, the wine is both lush and taut: generous, juicy fruit—white peach, nectarine and citrus—wrapped in a firm, linear acidity. A creamy mid-palate texture from extended lees contact is balanced by a deep, salt-tinged minerality that runs through the wine from start to finish. The finish is long, crystalline and delicately spicy, with a fine, salty snap that keeps you reaching back for another sip. Thanks to its structure, concentration and natural acidity, this 2021 has excellent aging potential; it will drink beautifully now with some air, but should evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, gaining more complexity and tertiary notes.

Production
The Ruppertsberger Hoheburg vineyard is a historic, 20-hectare premier site in Ruppertsberg, named after a 14th-century settlement. Dr. Bürklin-Wolf farms 4.68 hectares here, on white, overlying Buntsandstein (colored sandstone) soils that provide optimal heat retention and drainage, promoting full ripeness while preserving vibrancy. Situated at the foot of the Mittelhaardt, the vines benefit from a favorable, warm microclimate tempered by cool nighttime breezes. The Riesling grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, allowing the natural flora from the vineyard to shape the wine’s character. Maturation takes place in large traditional oak casks, where the wine rests on its lees (sur lie) until bottling, building texture, depth and complexity without overt oak flavor.

Food & Serving
This Premier Cru Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, excelling with refined yet flavorful dishes. Pair it with smoked or poached trout, sashimi, ceviche, or oysters to highlight its mineral edge, or with roasted poultry, veal schnitzel, or pork tenderloin to play up its fruit and creaminess. It also works beautifully with lightly spiced Asian cuisine—think ginger, lemongrass, or mild curries—and with vegetarian dishes like asparagus, roasted root vegetables, or goat’s cheese tart. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe to let the slightly wild, mineral bouquet unfold and the texture fully open.
