Description

The 2021 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Langenmorgen Grand Cru is one of the true reference-point dry Rieslings from the Pfalz, produced in tiny quantities from a jewel of a parcel in the famed Langenmorgen vineyard. Year after year it earns some of the highest critical scores in Germany, regularly landing between 95–100 points, thanks to its combination of purity, depth and age‑worthy structure. Drawing on a Burgundian-style classification and an exceptional slice of iron- and limestone-rich sandstone, this Grand Cru bottling captures the very essence of terroir-driven Pfalz Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Langenmorgen Grand Cru is pale to medium lemon with a vivid, crystalline brightness that hints at both youth and intensity. The nose is immediately precise and pure: flinty smoke and crushed stone rise first, followed by perfectly ripe citrus, white peach and subtle yellow plum. Underneath, a fine veil of spice, a suggestion of herbs and a distinct saline note add complexity and tension. On the palate, this is a dense yet finely etched Riesling, combining generous, juicy fruit with a strikingly mineral, almost chiselled backbone. Citrus zest, stone fruit and a gentle creaminess of texture are seamlessly interwoven with stony, spicy and subtly salty nuances. Despite its concentration, the wine does not feel bone-dry or austere; instead, it is tightly structured with a serious, almost tactile tannin grip that frames the long, layered finish. The 2021 has excellent aging potential – easily 10–15 years or more in a good cellar – during which it will gain additional complexity, silky texture and tertiary notes of honey, lanolin and dried herbs.

Production
The Langenmorgen vineyard sits in the Mittelhaardt sector of the Pfalz, near the forest, which creates marked diurnal temperature swings between warm days and cool nights. This helps preserve freshness while allowing the Riesling grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness. Bürklin-Wolf owns just 0.68 ha of the best, warmest section of this 7 ha Grosses Gewächs site, where iron- and lime-rich sandstone with loose deposits provides excellent drainage, mineral intensity and heat retention. The estate follows a Burgundian-style quality pyramid, and fruit for this Grand Cru is meticulously selected and hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the focus is on gentle, terroir-transparent vinification: careful pressing, slow fermentation and extended lees contact to build texture and complexity, all while maintaining precision, clarity and a dry, structured profile.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic Riesling that shines alongside refined dishes. Try it with shellfish (lobster, scallops, langoustines), delicate white fish with beurre blanc or citrus beurre monté, or fine poultry such as roast chicken or guinea fowl with light cream or morel sauces. It also works beautifully with veal, sweetbreads and subtly spiced Asian cuisine (think ginger, lemongrass and mild chili rather than heavy heat). Serve at 10–12 °C, slightly cooler for an aperitif, a touch warmer at the table to let the aromatics expand. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to open up the flinty, mineral layers and allow the fruit and texture to fully express themselves.

Producer
Weingut Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, based in Wachenheim in the Pfalz, is one of Germany’s most historic and influential Riesling estates, with roots dating back to the 16th century. A founding member of the VDP, the estate has been instrumental in redefining dry German Riesling through a Burgundian-inspired vineyard classification that emphasizes terroir hierarchy—village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru. Their holdings in top sites across Forst, Deidesheim, Ruppertsberg and Wachenheim include some of the most coveted parcels in the Mittelhaardt. Known for meticulous vineyard work and a commitment to expressing site character with precision and depth, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf regularly garners top international scores and is widely regarded as a benchmark producer for age-worthy, terroir-driven Pfalz Riesling.
