Description
The 2021 Domaine Yvon Clerget Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières is a refined white Burgundy that captures the precision, tension, and elegance that Puligny is famed for. From one of the village’s most highly regarded Premier Cru sites, this Chardonnay offers a beautifully chiselled expression of minerality, citrus, and discreet oak. In a cooler, more classical vintage like 2021, Les Perrières shines with remarkable clarity and finesse, making this a coveted bottle for Burgundy enthusiasts and collectors alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine presents a pale lemon to light gold hue with shimmering green reflections, signalling both youth and vibrancy. The nose is immediately refined and complex: pure lemon zest, white flowers, crushed oyster shell, and chalky minerals unfold gradually, supported by hints of green apple, pear, and a delicate touch of toasted hazelnut and subtle vanilla from judicious oak.
On the palate, the wine is taut, focused, and linear, with a pronounced mineral backbone that lives up to the Les Perrières name. Citrus fruits—lemon, lime, and a touch of grapefruit—are layered with stone fruit notes of white peach and nectarine, all framed by a very fine, mouth-watering acidity. The texture is silky yet energetic, with a long, saline finish that leaves an impression of wet stone and subtle brioche. While already highly enjoyable in its youth for its purity and tension, this 2021 has excellent aging potential: it should evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed, and tertiary complexity while retaining its core of minerality.
Production
Les Perrières is a renowned Premier Cru climat in Puligny-Montrachet, characterized by its stony, limestone-rich soils and excellent drainage, which naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour. The site’s combination of limestone and marl, along with its favorable exposition, contributes to wines of notable precision, salinity, and finesse. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar door. Vinification focuses on expressing terroir rather than heavy winemaking signatures: gentle pressing of whole clusters, fermentation in French oak barrels (a proportion new, used with restraint), followed by maturation on fine lees to build texture and complexity. The result is a Puligny-Montrachet that balances discreet oak with a crystal-clear sense of place.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières pairs superbly with refined seafood and delicate poultry dishes. Think poached turbot or sole with beurre blanc, seared scallops, lobster, or langoustines, as well as roast chicken with morel cream sauce or veal in light jus. Creamy risottos, especially with shellfish or wild mushrooms, and fine goat or soft-rind cheeses (such as a young Comté or Brie de Meaux) also make excellent partners. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F); avoid over-chilling, which can mute the wine’s aromatics. Young bottles benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter to open up the nose and soften the structure, while older vintages should be handled gently and decanted briefly only if necessary to separate from sediment.
Producer
Domaine Yvon Clerget is a historic family estate in Burgundy, with roots in Volnay that stretch back several centuries and a reputation for producing refined, terroir-driven wines. After a period of relative quiet, the domaine has been revitalized by the younger generation, bringing renewed energy and precision to both red and white Burgundy. While Volnay is the spiritual heart of the estate, the Clerget family’s holdings in prestigious appellations like Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières underline their standing in the Côte de Beaune. Carefully managed vineyards, low yields, and meticulous work in the cellar have earned the domaine growing acclaim among Burgundy lovers, who prize its wines for their purity, elegance, and faithful expression of site.
