Description

The 2021 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is one of Burgundy’s most coveted expressions of Pinot Noir, sitting just a heartbeat away from Grand Cru status. Drawn from a jewel-like Premier Cru parcel in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny, this wine is famed for its sensual perfume, silken texture and haunting finesse. Long regarded as the most romantic of Chambolle’s vineyards, Les Amoureuses rivals neighboring Musigny in prestige and desirability, particularly in a classical, finely etched vintage such as 2021.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Les Amoureuses shows a shimmering, translucent robe ranging from bright cherry red to deep ruby, with a delicate, almost weightless appearance that hints at its finesse. The nose is intensely perfumed yet wonderfully nuanced: wild raspberry, red cherry and kirsch weave together with rose petals, violets and a whisper of sweet spice. With air, more complex layers begin to unfold—subtle notes of truffle, forest floor, fine woods and, in time, a hint of game and musky depth, all wrapped in an elegant, airy bouquet. On the palate, this wine is the definition of silk: ultra-fine, powdery tannins glide across the tongue, giving a sensation of density without heaviness. Pure red berry fruit, crushed raspberry, wild strawberry and red currant are lifted by a taut, chalky-mineral backbone and vibrant acidity that speaks clearly of Chambolle’s limestone soils. The mid-palate is both intense and weightless, with a long, filigreed finish that lingers on notes of flowers, red fruit and subtle savory undertones. While already captivating in its youth, the 2021 has the structure and energy to evolve beautifully over 10–15+ years, gaining in complexity, truffle and sous-bois nuances with proper cellaring.

Production
Les Amoureuses lies on a steep, well-drained slope of thin, stony soils over hard limestone and marl in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny, a terroir famed for producing some of the most refined Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits. Joseph Drouhin farms this prized Premier Cru parcel with meticulous care and a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic principles, favoring low yields and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve delicacy and aromatic complexity. After rigorous sorting, the grapes are gently vinified with a high proportion of whole berries or partial whole clusters, depending on the vintage, to enhance perfume and finesse. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, followed by aging in carefully selected French oak barrels (with a discreet use of new oak) to frame, rather than mask, the vineyard’s character. The result is a wine that captures the pure, floral, mineral-driven identity of Les Amoureuses with remarkable precision.

Food & Serving
This is a profoundly delicate and nuanced wine that shines with refined, subtly flavored dishes. Ideal pairings include roast pigeon or quail, veal tenderloin with morels, fine poultry like Bresse chicken, or a simple yet luxurious dish of fresh tagliatelle with wild mushrooms and herbs. It also marries beautifully with mild, creamy cheeses such as Brillat-Savarin or a young, well-made Reblochon. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture; avoid serving too warm, which can blur its precision. In its youth, decant gently for 30–60 minutes to allow the bouquet to unfurl; for older bottles, a brief, careful decant or simply serving from the bottle after standing upright is recommended to preserve its most delicate aromas.

Producer
Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most respected family-owned domaines, with an estate spanning from Chablis in the north to the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits in the south. Over several generations, the Drouhin family has built a reputation for elegance, purity and a terroir-driven style, often described as the benchmark of classical Burgundy. They were early advocates of sustainable and organic viticulture in the region, later embracing biodynamic practices across their vineyards. Their holdings in Chambolle-Musigny, and particularly in the illustrious Les Amoureuses Premier Cru, are considered among their crown jewels—wines that regularly feature in top critics’ reports and international auctions. Today, Joseph Drouhin stands as a reference point for fine, age-worthy Burgundy, combining deep regional roots with a consistently high level of craftsmanship.
