Description

The 2021 Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron Chambolle-Musigny is a poised, terroir-driven Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted villages. Sourced from old vines in three prized lieux-dits, it captures the hallmark silkiness and fragrance that have made Chambolle-Musigny a true reference point for Burgundy lovers. Confuron’s hallmark balance of precision, elegance, and depth ensures this is a village wine that performs well above its appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chambolle-Musigny shows a luminous, medium ruby color with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose is seductive and layered, opening with ripe red and black berries—bright blackcurrant, cassis, and wild raspberry—interwoven with violet, subtle rose petal, and well-judged oak notes of sweet spice, cocoa, and a faint hint of vanilla. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet surprisingly concentrated, with a sleek, chocolate-tinged entry that quickly fans out into vibrant, red-fruited precision. Fine, chalky tannins frame flavors of blackcurrant, dark cherry, and cassis, supported by a fresh, linear acidity that brings lift and length. The oak, around 30% new, is still present in youth and will need a couple of years in bottle to fully meld into the wine’s fruit and mineral spine. With proper cellaring, it should evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining complexity, silkier texture, and more pronounced savory and truffle notes over time.

Production
This wine is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from three adjoining Chambolle-Musigny lieux-dits—Derrière la Four, Les Pas de Chats, and Les Condemennes—totaling about 1.15 hectares. The vineyards sit on classic Côte de Nuits soils of limestone-rich stone, sand, and marl, which contribute to Chambolle’s signature finesse and aromatic lift, and many of the domaine’s vines are very old, some exceeding 90 years of age. Harvesting is meticulous, with low yields and careful selection to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, the three parcels are vinified together. As with all Confuron wines, the goal is to let fruit and terroir speak, so extraction is measured rather than aggressive. The wine matures in French oak barrels, with roughly 30% new oak and the balance in used barriques, followed by a long malolactic fermentation. It is bottled without filtration and fined gently with proteins, preserving texture, purity, and aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny is an excellent partner for refined, nuanced dishes that mirror its elegance: think roast chicken with morels, veal tenderloin, duck breast with cherries, or pork loin with herb jus. It also pairs beautifully with delicate game birds, truffled pasta, or mild to medium cheeses such as Comté, Tomme de Savoie, or a young Époisses. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. For current drinking, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps soften the oak and open the bouquet; in a few years’ time, a brief 20–30 minute decant will be sufficient to let the wine fully express its Chambolle grace.

Producer
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron is a highly respected family estate based in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, today run by Sophie and Alain Meunier-Confuron. Over the years, Alain has systematically refined both viticulture and winemaking, elevating the domaine into the top tier of Burgundy producers. Their holdings are small, often no more than a hectare per site, spread across some of the most prestigious villages in the region, including Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée. Old vines, thoughtful work in the vineyard, and a restrained, terroir-focused approach in the cellar have become the estate’s calling cards. Known for wines that combine purity of fruit, depth, and elegance, Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron has earned a reputation for crafting Burgundies that are both true to their origin and capable of graceful, long-term aging.
