Description

The 2021 Descendientes de J. Palacios Moncerbal BIO is one of Bierzo’s most coveted reds, a “vino de paraje” that showcases the singular character of the Moncerbal slope in the village of Corullón. Precision, finesse and a striking mineral backbone put this wine in the same conversation as top Grand Cru Burgundy, often surprising tasters in blind line-ups. Certified organic and made in tiny quantities, it is a masterclass in elegance, purity and terroir expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Moncerbal BIO shows a luminous, deep ruby color with a slight garnet rim, more translucent than dense, hinting at its finesse rather than power. The nose is wonderfully perfumed and lifted: wild red berries, violets, rose petals and crushed herbs mingle with subtle notes of blood orange, spice, graphite and wet stone. With air, more complexity unfolds—hints of pomegranate, fennel seed and a delicate, savory earthiness. On the palate, the wine is ultra-elegant, linear and vibrant, with a cool, mineral core. Silky, ultra-fine tannins frame flavors of wild cherry, redcurrant and cranberry, layered with floral tones, chalky minerality and a whisper of sweet spice from the well-judged oak. The alcohol is modest at 13.5%, contributing to its sense of grace and drinkability, while the acidity is bright and mouthwatering, giving the wine lift and length. The finish is long, velvety and juicy, with lingering notes of flowers, citrus zest and limestone. While already captivating in its youth, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential over 10–15 years, gaining further complexity, tertiary nuances and textural harmony with time in the cellar.

Production
Moncerbal 2021 is sourced from several tiny parcels totaling just 1.51 hectares within the Moncerbal paraje in Corullón, in the heart of Bierzo. The steep, high-altitude vineyards, with their poor, stony, slate- and limestone-rich soils, naturally limit yields and give the wine its hallmark tension, freshness and mineral depth. The blend is predominantly Mencía, complemented by a small but meaningful 4% of traditional white varieties co-planted in the old vineyards, which add aromatic lift and finesse. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place with some whole clusters and using only indigenous yeasts, a slow 46-day maceration in oak vessels enhancing aromatic complexity and fine tannic structure without heaviness. The wine is then aged for 11 months in a combination of oak barrels and large foudres, followed by nearly 9 months of bottle aging before release, resulting in a wine of remarkable poise, depth and precision.

Food & Serving
This refined Bierzo red is a superb match for dishes that echo its elegance and subtlety rather than overwhelm it. Think roast duck with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, grilled pigeon, veal chops, mushroom risotto, truffled poultry or simply high-quality charcuterie and aged but not overly powerful cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring aromatic herbs, root vegetables and wild mushrooms, which highlight its floral and mineral nuances. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to preserve its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting for 1–2 hours when young is recommended to allow the perfume and texture to fully unfold, though it can also be enjoyed slowly evolving in the glass over an evening.

Producer
Descendientes de J. Palacios was founded in 1999 by Álvaro Palacios—famed for his work in Priorat—and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios, with the goal of revealing the true potential of Bierzo’s old-vine Mencía. Named in honor of Álvaro’s father, the estate has become a reference point not only for Bierzo, but for Spanish fine wine as a whole. Working organically and biodynamically in steep, terraced vineyards around the village of Corullón, the team focuses on expressing individual parajes (single sites) through meticulous viticulture and sensitive, terroir-driven winemaking. Their wines, including Moncerbal, have helped redefine Bierzo as a source of world-class, age-worthy reds, garnering top scores and international acclaim for their elegance, purity and sense of place.
