Description
2021 Clos Mogador Manyetes Vi de Vila Gratallops is a powerful, small‑production red that captures the raw, dramatic beauty of Priorat. Sourced from a single, near‑forbidding hillside vineyard above Gratallops, it is made entirely from old‑vine Carignan rooted deep in poor, rocky soils. Officially classified as a “Vi de Vila Gratallops,” it showcases the distinct character of this historic village with striking purity and intensity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Manyetes 2021 shows a vivid, bright purple core with youthful, inky highlights that hint at its concentration and energy. The nose is deeply expressive and layered: wet slate and graphite rise first, followed by notes of peat, wild blueberries, black cherries, violet, and a savoury thread of licorice, all knit together in a very harmonious way.
On the palate, this is wonderfully rustic in the best Priorat sense—structured, characterful and precise rather than over‑extracted. Polished yet firm tannins frame pure dark fruit, with blue and black berries layered over mineral, smoky, almost salty undertones from the llicorella (schist) soils. A vibrant acidity keeps the wine fresh and lifted, leading into a very long, resonant finish where fruit, florals and minerality linger. Still youthful, the 2021 has the structure and freshness to age gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining complexity and silkier texture with time in bottle.
Production
Manyetes comes from a tiny, 10‑hectare site in the most rugged part of Gratallops, of which only about 3 hectares are actually planted to vines. The steep, sun‑baked slopes of fractured slate (llicorella) and the poor, stony soils force the old Carignan vines to dig extremely deep for water and nutrients, naturally limiting yields and amplifying concentration and minerality. The vineyard sits at around 400 metres altitude, benefiting from cooler nights that help preserve acidity and aromatic definition. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with meticulous selection due to the low yields and challenging terrain. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with great care to respect the character of the fruit and terroir, then matured for about 18 months in top quality new European oak barrels, which add structure and subtle spice without overshadowing the wine’s intense sense of place.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Priorat that shines with richly flavoured dishes: think slow‑braised lamb shank, venison or other game, grilled ribeye, Iberico pork, or hearty stews with chorizo and smoked paprika. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and earthy, rosemary‑scented Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for best balance and expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics to unfold and the tannins to soften, revealing the full depth and elegance of the wine.
Producer
Clos Mogador is one of the emblematic names of Priorat, founded by René Barbier in the 1980s and instrumental in the region’s modern renaissance. Alongside a handful of visionary producers, Barbier helped transform Priorat from a nearly forgotten area into one of Spain’s most respected fine‑wine regions, centred on the dramatic llicorella slopes around Gratallops. Clos Mogador’s flagship wine is recognised as one of Spain’s great reds, and the estate holds prestigious single‑vineyard classifications. Manyetes is its more elusive sibling: a tiny‑production, vineyard‑designated Carignan that offers a pure, uncompromising expression of a single, extreme site—making it highly sought after by collectors and serious Priorat enthusiasts.
