Description

The 2021 Clos Mogador Magnum is one of Priorat’s true benchmark reds, here presented in an impressive 1.5L bottle and wooden case. Crafted by the legendary René Barbier from a single, iconic estate in Gratallops, it captures the full drama of Priorat’s slate terraces while leaning into a fresher, more nuanced style in 2021. Certified as a rare “Vi de Finca” – Spain’s highest single-vineyard designation – this biodynamically grown wine is both a collector’s piece and a profound expression of terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos Mogador shows an opaque, deep purple-black core with a vibrant violet rim, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is unusually refined for Priorat: pure black cherry and blackberry are wrapped in layers of Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, thyme, lavender), graphite-like minerality, and subtle smoke, with hints of espresso, dark chocolate, licorice and a discreet, well-judged touch of toasted oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet remarkably poised. The magnum format emphasizes its satin-like texture: dense, ripe black fruit is lifted by fresh acidity, giving the wine a cool, almost continental profile despite its Mediterranean roots. Notes of coffee bean, cocoa, truffle and black olive unfold in layers, supported by fine-grained, silky but persistent tannins that promise long development. The finish is long and mineral, with a savoury, stony edge and lingering sweet spices. While already thrilling after proper aeration, this 2021 Clos Mogador Magnum has a clear aging window well past 2035, with the larger format further extending its cellar potential.

Production
Clos Mogador is sourced exclusively from the estate’s steep, terraced vineyards around Gratallops, rooted in classic Priorat “llicorella” – dark, flaky slate soils that yield low quantities of intensely mineral fruit. The vines are farmed organically and biodynamically, with meticulous attention to biodiversity and soil health; all vineyard work is done by hand on the rugged slopes. In 2021 the blend is 45% Garnacha, 29% Cariñena, 16% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the grape varieties picked over a span of roughly two months to ensure each is harvested at optimal ripeness. Uniquely, René Barbier presses the grapes using an olive oil press, extracting only about half the usual volume of juice – the purest fraction – resulting in exceptional concentration and texture. Fermentation and élevage are handled with the aim of preserving freshness and reducing overt oak impact, allowing Garnacha and Cariñena to lead the aromatic profile and for the slate-driven minerality to shine.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Priorat is a natural partner for richly flavoured dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, venison or wild boar stews, aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, and game birds with truffle or mushroom sauces. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs, roasted root vegetables, and well-aged hard cheeses like Manchego curado or Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity. In its youth, especially in magnum, decant generously for 2–3 hours to open up the nose and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter 60–90 minute decant will be sufficient to let the wine fully express its depth.

Producer
Clos Mogador is the life’s work of René Barbier, one of the visionary pioneers who resurrected Priorat in the late 20th century alongside figures like Álvaro Palacios, Carles Pastrana and José Luis Pérez. Established on a single, steep vineyard in the now-famous village of Gratallops in the 1970s, Clos Mogador helped redefine Spain’s fine wine landscape and soon gained cult status, often mentioned in the same breath as legends like Sassicaia and Château Margaux. The estate’s groundbreaking, terroir-driven approach – organic and biodynamic farming, extreme low yields, slate-driven minerality and a highly distinctive pressing method – has inspired winemakers across the world. Clos Mogador was the first wine in Spain to receive the prestigious “Vi de Finca” designation, confirming its long-standing international reputation and its historic role as a reference point for single-vineyard excellence in Priorat.
