Description
The 2021 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Magnum is a stately expression of one of Pauillac’s most cherished Deuxième Cru Classé estates, captured in a format made for long, graceful aging. In a cooler, classical Bordeaux vintage, this wine leans into its signature elegance and finesse rather than raw power, offering a beautifully poised, terroir-driven claret. The magnum format further elevates its aging potential, making it ideal for collectors and special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pichon Comtesse shows a deep, garnet-ruby hue with vibrant purple highlights at the rim, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is refined and layered: ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry are framed by notes of graphite, cedar shavings and tobacco leaf, with hints of violets, crushed stone, and a subtle, classy oak spice.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Pauillac that prioritizes precision over heft. Expect a core of dark fruit—cassis, plum, and blackberry—supported by finely etched tannins and lively, refreshing acidity. Nuances of cigar box, pencil lead, licorice, and cocoa unfold with air, leading into a long, saline-tinged finish that is both persistent and poised. In magnum, this 2021 should develop beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining more complexity, softness, and aromatic nuance while retaining its structure and freshness.
Production
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is rooted in the gravelly, well-drained soils of Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, with deep layers of Garonne gravel over clay and sand that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and its classic Bordeaux companions. The 2021 vintage was carefully managed in the vineyard, with strict selection and meticulous canopy work to ensure ripe, healthy fruit in a cooler, more traditional year. Harvesting is conducted parcel by parcel, predominantly by hand, to preserve berry integrity and allow for precise sorting. In the cellar, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to favor elegance and aromatic clarity over sheer concentration. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques—typically with a significant, but well-judged, proportion of new oak—to integrate tannins, add subtle spice, and build complexity while retaining the estate’s hallmark refinement.
Food & Serving
This refined Pauillac is a superb match for classic French and modern European cuisine alike. Think roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, duck breast with a red wine reduction, mushroom dishes, and hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic detail and textural finesse. In its youth, especially in magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; as it matures, a gentle decant to remove sediment shortly before serving will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of the most revered estates of Pauillac, ranked as a Second Growth in the historic 1855 Classification and long admired for producing wines of remarkable charm, depth, and longevity. Located just south of Château Latour, the property benefits from prime gravel terroir and a storied heritage that dates back to the late 17th century. Over the years, Pichon Comtesse has built a reputation for crafting some of the Médoc’s most elegant and seductive Cabernet-based blends, often described as combining Pauillac power with an almost Margaux-like finesse. Under modern, quality-focused stewardship, the château continues to be a benchmark for the appellation, consistently delivering wines that are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
