Sourced from the deep gravel soils of Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, the 2021 Château Pichon Longueville Baron is anchored primarily in Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot to add suppleness and depth. The well-drained gravel over a clay and limestone subsoil promotes deep root systems and low yields, concentrating flavor and enhancing the classic graphite-mineral edge that defines the estate. Harvesting is done parcel by parcel, predominantly by hand, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to select only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches in this cooler, more challenging year. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, with gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse rather than maximize power. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques, a significant portion of which are new, for roughly 18–20 months, allowing the tannins to integrate and the bouquet to gain complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
