Description
Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated First Growth estates, offering a more accessible expression of Pauillac while still carrying the unmistakable hallmark of Château Mouton Rothschild. The 2021 vintage reflects the elegance, freshness, and precision that define this cooler year in Bordeaux, making it an especially attractive choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby hue with a polished, youthful sheen. The nose is refined and inviting, with classic Pauillac notes of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, cigar box, and subtle floral and spicy undertones.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a structured yet supple profile. Dark berry fruit, savory earth, and mineral nuances unfold with balance and precision. While approachable in youth compared to the grand vin, it should also reward several years of cellaring and can develop beautifully over the next 8 to 15 years.
Production
Produced in Pauillac on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Le Petit Mouton benefits from the estate’s gravel-rich soils, which provide excellent drainage and help the vines achieve strong ripeness and concentration. The 2021 vintage required careful vineyard work and selective harvesting, as conditions demanded precision to preserve fruit quality and freshness.
Vinification follows the high standards of Château Mouton Rothschild, with meticulous parcel selection and traditional Bordeaux winemaking techniques designed to preserve purity, structure, and aromatic complexity. The result is a second wine that closely reflects the estate’s identity and craftsmanship.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, and mushroom-based dishes. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and rich French cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about 1 hour if drinking young to allow the aromas to open and the tannins to soften.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates and a historic First Growth classified in 1855. Based in Pauillac, the estate is renowned for producing some of the world’s most collectible red wines, as well as for its iconic artist-designed labels. Over the decades, it has earned a reputation for excellence, innovation, and remarkable consistency, making it a benchmark producer in the region.
