Description

The 2021 Château Mouton Rothschild Aile d'Argent is the luminous white counterpart to one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates. Crafted in limited quantities, this dry white wine marries precision, depth, and elegance in a vintage marked by freshness and tension. It stands out as a refined, ageworthy Bordeaux blanc that showcases Mouton’s exacting standards applied to white wine. Aile d’Argent’s unique selling point lies in its blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and a touch of Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle, grown on the same prestigious Pauillac terroir that produces the château’s legendary reds. Its character is defined by vibrant aromatics, layered texture, and remarkable purity of fruit, all underpinned by meticulous barrel élevage. First released in the early 1990s, Aile d’Argent has become one of the most sought‑after dry whites of the Left Bank, proving that Mouton’s excellence extends well beyond red wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Aile d’Argent shows a pale straw to light gold hue, with silvery-green reflections that hint at its energy and youth. The nose is immediately expressive and refined: lifted aromas of white peach, fresh lemon zest, grapefruit oil, and green apple are intertwined with floral notes of jasmine and acacia blossom. Subtle layers of crushed stone, beeswax, and delicate toast from oak aging add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this is a focused and finely etched wine, medium-bodied yet with impressive depth. A backbone of lively acidity drives flavors of citrus, orchard fruits, and ripe gooseberry, complemented by hints of passion fruit, pear skin, and a gentle herbal edge reminiscent of fresh fennel and lemongrass. The Sémillon contributes a supple, almost waxy mid-palate texture, while the Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris deliver tension and aromatic lift. Oak is beautifully integrated, adding a faint creaminess and a touch of vanilla and spice on the long, saline finish. Enjoyable in its youth for its brightness and precision, the 2021 also has solid aging potential; it should develop added complexity, honeyed notes, and richer texture over 8–12 years in a good cellar.

Production
Sourced from Château Mouton Rothschild’s privileged Pauillac vineyards in Bordeaux, the 2021 Aile d’Argent comes from gravelly soils over a limestone and clay subsoil—terroir famed for producing wines of clarity, minerality, and finesse. The blend is typically dominated by Sauvignon Blanc, supported by Sémillon, with small proportions of Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle to enhance aromatic nuance and texture. Grapes are picked by hand in small batches to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in a vintage that demanded precision. After gentle pressing, the must is fermented—largely in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new—to build structure and complexity. The wine is then aged on fine lees, with bâtonnage applied judiciously to add creaminess and breadth while preserving freshness and pure fruit expression. The result is a meticulously crafted white Bordeaux that balances modern precision with classical elegance.

Food & Serving
The 2021 Aile d’Argent is a versatile partner at the table, especially with refined seafood and white meat dishes. It pairs beautifully with dishes like grilled turbot or sole, seared scallops, lobster with beurre blanc, or oysters with a light mignonette. Creamy poultry preparations—such as roast chicken with morels, veal blanquette, or guinea fowl in a light cream and herb sauce—also highlight its texture and depth. For a vegetarian match, consider asparagus risotto, spring vegetables with beurre blanc, or a delicate goat cheese tart. Serve well-chilled but not too cold, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. In its youth, a brief 15–30 minutes in a decanter or simply some time in the glass helps the wine open up; older bottles (5+ years) can benefit from slightly longer, gentle aeration to reveal their more honeyed and nutty nuances.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild, located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, is one of the world’s most esteemed wine estates and part of the illustrious First Growth classification. Owned by the Rothschild family since 1853, the château achieved a historic reclassification in 1973, when it was elevated from Second to First Growth status—an unprecedented acknowledgment of its quality. While Mouton is most famous for its grand vin and its artist-designed labels, the estate has also established itself as a benchmark for premium white Bordeaux with Aile d’Argent. Drawing on the same meticulous vineyard management and cellar expertise that have made Mouton Rothschild a global icon, the winery’s white wine program has helped reassert the importance of serious, ageworthy dry whites from the Médoc, reinforcing the estate’s significance as a leader in Bordeaux innovation and excellence.
