Description
The 2021 Château Montrose La Dame de Montrose Saint-Estèphe in magnum format offers a refined expression of Left Bank Bordeaux from one of the Médoc’s most revered estates. As the second wine of Château Montrose, La Dame is crafted with the same care and precision as the grand vin, but with a more approachable, earlier-drinking style. This 2021 release highlights the freshness, elegance, and classical structure that define modern Saint-Estèphe, presented in a large format ideal for gatherings and extended aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2021 La Dame de Montrose shows a deep ruby to garnet hue with a bright, youthful rim, reflecting its vibrancy and concentration. The nose opens with pure notes of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, and wild blackberry, layered with graphite, violets, and a touch of cedar and tobacco leaf. Subtle spice, a hint of pencil shavings, and a mineral, almost gravelly undertone speak clearly of its Médoc origins.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, precise, and beautifully balanced, with a core of dark fruits framed by fine, chalky tannins. Flavors of cassis, plum, and redcurrant mingle with savory notes of earth, dried herbs, and cocoa, leading to a long, lingering finish with fresh acidity and a touch of saline minerality. The 2021 vintage is classically styled rather than opulent, emphasizing finesse and drinkability. In magnum, it has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed from a few years after release for its vibrant fruit, but will evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and greater aromatic nuance.
Production
La Dame de Montrose is sourced from the gravelly, clay-limestone vineyards of Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary. This prime terroir of deep gravel and well-drained soils, combined with the moderating influence of the river, provides ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, with careful sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only healthy, optimally ripe fruit is used. Vinification typically occurs in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new. This approach allows the wine to develop structure and complexity while maintaining the elegance and freshness that define La Dame de Montrose.
Food & Serving
This magnum of 2021 La Dame de Montrose is a versatile partner for classic French and modern cuisine alike. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, entrecôte with béarnaise, duck breast, veal chops, and game birds, as well as richer dishes like beef bourguignon or mushroom-based ragouts. Hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or mature cheddar also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both structure and aromatics. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and release the bouquet; as it gains bottle age, a brief 30–45 minute decant will generally suffice to let the wine fully express its complexity.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of the Médoc, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Located in Saint-Estèphe, the estate has long been celebrated for producing powerful, age-worthy wines that rival many of the region’s First Growths. La Dame de Montrose, introduced in the late 20th century, is the château’s second wine, created to showcase a more accessible, earlier-drinking side of the estate while maintaining the emblematic Montrose character. Under the stewardship of current owners and a highly regarded winemaking team, Château Montrose has invested heavily in the vineyard and cellar, earning consistent acclaim from critics and collectors alike, and reinforcing its status as a benchmark producer in Bordeaux.
