Production
Château Léoville Las Cases is centered on the famed walled ‘Clos’ in the northern part of Saint-Julien, directly adjacent to Pauillac and within sight of the Gironde estuary. The vineyards sit on deep Günzian gravel over clay and sand, an elite terroir that promotes excellent drainage while forcing the vines to root deeply, contributing to the wine’s hallmark minerality and structure. The estate is farmed with meticulous attention: vines are densely planted, yields are kept low, and the grapes are harvested entirely by hand with rigorous sorting in both vineyard and cellar. In 2021, careful selection was particularly crucial given the cooler, more challenging conditions, ensuring only the best fruit entered the grand vin. Fermentation takes place in a combination of temperature-controlled stainless steel and traditional wooden vats, with parcel-by-parcel vinification to preserve the nuances of each plot. The wine is then aged for around 18–20 months in high-quality French oak barriques, a significant proportion of which are new, lending subtle spice and structure without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
